why not get a cheap refurbished desktop then? You can buy one with better specs for the about the same price of an old laptop =)

pricewatch.com then buy the cheapest one you see, should be about $100-$200. Not saying it has more than 1 mhz, but hey, its cheap :).

From what I've seen, a desktop PC is actually cheaper than a laptop. You pay extra for the portability. So I'd just go for a normal PC. :)

I'm looking to get a new PC but how can you build your own?
hojo
April 10th, 2003, 06:32 AM
i wouldn't recommend a laptop for your room. just build parts seperatly for a pc and do that.
you can buy the parts and build a good pc for about $200. the most expensive things are the monitor and cpu (you can get combo packs with those and the motherboards for cheaper).
like nali said, go to www.pricewatch.com. any help you need with building it we can help.

isn't it hard to build your own though?

just go out and buy a bunch of parts, place tape in strategic positions, shove them in the case, plug in the power supply, and pray.

Your first $25 could be for a book... they have a few good ones at compUSA... *Build&Repair your own Comp* or some such...
then go online for all the ?'s that don't seem to be answered there in the book.
treat it like a science project
...The experience would be way more valuable than the savings on the machine...
a win~win deal

itīs not that hard to build your own pc. but it will not come cheap as $200, it will be a bit more...
█ = read carefully
█ = important stuff
█ = easy part
----------------------------------------
first you will ned to decide what machine you want to build. Pentium or AMD? Processor speed?
then you get to buy the processor you chosed, and a Mb (motherboard) compatible (nothing on-board!!), ASUS is one of the best manufacturers.
then you get to buy memmory. Look into your Mbīs manual for the right tipe of memmory (dimm, sdram, ddr,...)
chose what video card, sound card, network card, HD, monitor, keyboard, mouse, CPU case, you want to have and put them all together
remember to check on your Mbīs manual before buying anything to see f it is compatible, and to look for the instructions on how to build the machine, if you have any hard time iīm sure there is a lot of tutes on the web, and in the worst case scenario another fellow kirupian will guide you thru the buildind process.

It's worth the knowledge to know how to build your PC because you'll probably be upgrading your hardware regularly... and that's just cheaper if you know how to do it on your own. Also - research your parts especially motherboard reviews. It will save you some nerves and extra trips to the computer shop.
I've heard some unsavory things about tigerdirect... I personally would never buy from them. Newegg.com is a great place to get affordable, quality parts.

i think it is newegg that send my boss 12 bad motherboards and 8 bad sticks of DDR ram and refused to refund his money...

Weird... i've used them a lot of times and so have all my computer-using friends... no problems at all.

Building your own pc is really cheaper, and it's not very hard.
First you make a list of what you need, (check the prices) and putting you pc together is very easy. It all points out itselves. ...
I would not buy a book, and if it really isn't working, you can always ask a friend...
Jubba

it might not have been newegg. I'm not sure but I know it was tiger because the whole problem with crappy products made him switch back to tiger....

Putting it together isn't hard. It's finding compatible parts that's that kicker. So read reviews. You can save even more money by checking out places like HotDeals.org (http://www.hotdeals.org/), Ben's Bargains (http://www.bensbargains.net/), or Spoofee.com (http://www.spoofee.com/).

Alex::
(You can probably dispense with a book if you want to save $25) but it can make you feel more confident about little details on the basics of putting together electronics equiptment and keeping track of what your doing and in what order without allways having to run downstairs to the family comp for another look ... .
..buy the book ... first
besides, it'll impress your parents that you did some studying first and the'll likely feel better about letting you vaccum out the bank.

Alex: sorry I hadn't seen this thread in a bit, but here is my advice... some one mentioned this think, but Im too lazy to double check - get all your stuff from pricewatch.com PERIOD. You can find amazing prices there, be sure to get "bulk packaging/product" - it just means the piece comes in a blank bulk shipping package without all the fun pictures (normally reserved for companies like gateway/dell that use the components) - but it's cheaper. ;)
As far as the challenge of building it - actually very easy, just do ao search with these words "guide how to build your own PC" and you'll find a ton of online guides. Like Renn said the main thing is to make sure all your components will work together, information on this is easy to find, and not that hard to figure out. Either way when you pick your components list them here before you buy and either myself or some one else can look them over for you.
$700 budget.... I'd definitly buy an AMD processor with your money constraints.
Also, do not forget about things like: operating system (if you are upgrading or not reusing your current), fans/cooling system (possibly you can reuse these items off your old), disk/CD drives (people always forget about these). Also sound card (although if performance is your goal and you only have 700 to spend I'd ditch it). etc...
OH! and definitly go to an electronic store to buy yourself something to ground your body for while you assemble it. Cheap little thing that is like a wrist band and clip to keep any static from zapping your stuff.
Um... I think thats it, if I think of anything else I'll post it. Good luck and let us know what you choose.
Peace
Alex

you cant build your own laptop but you can buil a desknote which is better IMO because it has the portability of a laptop and all the power of a desktop computer and its customizable and as cheap as a desktop computer check my post on the first page of this thread so you can see what im talking about, if your going to build your own pc make sure you choose a AMD processor i prefer AMD over pentium i personallly think its much better and its cheaper too so if youre on a tight budget make sure you get a amd processor and get all your parts from pricewatch.com you will get some great deals there

See my post above.... I agree.
The desknote system is nice, but if I could build what ever I wanted... I'd get a server for my "homebase" and have a clone for a laptop with a satillite high speed connection and run my server platform from anywhere I went. Oh if I had the money... quad Xeon chips, nearly unlimited storage, worldwide access and management of my whole system... ahhh if only money grew on trees ;) the mobility of a laptop and the features of a powerful rack.. how nice.
Peace
I still think the BEST way to go however is to just build a standard PC tower.
