View Full Version : 3D or Swift 3D battle?

Anyone want a 3D or Swift 3D battle? I'm keen to put my skills to the test :)

cybergold
April 8th, 2003, 12:04 AM
sure, I'd like to go against you C:-) Set the specifications, sure, when do you want to start? :P

ironikart
April 8th, 2003, 03:37 AM
We can start pretty much straight away if you want. I guess we make up the rules and specifications. Do you want to use swift 3d or other 3D applications? I'm a max user so that's my primary modelling tool... up to you whether you want to restrict the challenge to Swift or not?

My preference is Max, but we could challenge still if you are using Maya, XSI or truespace.

my choice of rules would be:
1.) 3rd party apps allowed for modelling (illustrator, max etc)
2.) no after render touch-ups, the image must be totally rendered by the 3D application of choice.
3.) must be able to show proof of the model being built (e.g. wireframe)
4.) model must be made from scratch, no pre-built models.

After that I guess we wait for a theme from the moderator?

cybergold
April 8th, 2003, 08:21 AM
I don't use 3ds Max or any other 3d applications, only Swift 3d v3. :-/ Are you ok with that?

morse
April 8th, 2003, 03:29 PM
How about general 3d, any app, with no after-render touchup. Render once with materials for your final product, and render again with wireframe.

cybergold
April 8th, 2003, 04:24 PM
3ds Max user vs. Swift 3d v3 user?:-\ I can't do that, unless ofcourse you let swift users use photoshop =) Can we have a swift battle this time. If not, I guess we can start a battle solely for swift.

ironikart
April 8th, 2003, 07:14 PM
How about a Swift 3D battle now, other 3D apps later down the track. I have v3 as well, so if we can get a theme and some sort of timeframe...

to make it fair:
1.) Use only swift for the modelling and rendering
2.) No after render touch-ups or effects
3.) Provide screenshot of the model/s
4.) model must be made from scratch - no prebuilt models

sound ok?

cybergold
April 8th, 2003, 11:42 PM
sounds perfect to me :bounce:

I forgot to mention about texturing. I think that we can be pretty liberal here, if you want to make your own textures (photoshop or whatever) or use the defaults. Everyone ok with that?

yeah, sure, why not, but i don't know how to do that :hair: . So i am going to have to improvise ;) . Can you tell me how to get a path into this program? everytime i try exporting a path from photoshop, and then importing it into Swift, it says that the path is not defined?? or filled?? and it can't be imported, hope you don't mind giving the competition some help :smirk:

Hawk
April 14th, 2003, 01:12 AM
i dont think you can use photoshop paths, at least thats what i think from what ive read... the paths that swift reads are .eps and i think that comes from illustrator... im kinda clueless but its somthing like that

hawk

(btw, anyone know any good illustrator tuts?)

ironikart
April 14th, 2003, 02:08 AM
I theory you should be able to export paths from photoshop as *.ai and then import them into swift.

To add textures to 3d objects in swfit, click and drag the bitmap texture from the bottom right onto the object and choose the bitmap that you want to add as a texure. The rendered output will have to be set to raster before it shows up in the rendered image. You can set the mapping type by editing the material.

cybergold
April 14th, 2003, 10:40 AM
i have tried exporting an .ai, but it never works. When importing, it says, and i quote, "An error has occurred attempting to import the specified file. This error is most commonly caused by attempting to import a file that does not contain outlined or filled shapes."

.soulty
April 14th, 2003, 11:12 AM
have you tried exporting it as a .ai version 7 file?

cybergold
April 14th, 2003, 08:21 PM
What do you mean by 7? Here is what i do, i open a new transparent doc in PS, then i use the pen tool to make a shape. After that, i right click and say fill path. Then i go to File > Export > Paths to Illustrator, then i save it as a .ai file. When i go to Swift and try importing, it says that there is no fill or outline. :-\ anyone know how to solve this :q: :bounce:

.soulty
April 14th, 2003, 09:33 PM
ah k. I use illustrator to export the paths. And in illustrator you can save as older versions of the file. such as i mention Illustrator 7 file. this sometimes needs to be done , so to be compatible with other apps, such as Swift3d.

::::This is not the case with the new swft3d v3 because i just tried it. :-\

Give me a sec ill try to help you out.

.soulty
April 14th, 2003, 09:52 PM
dosent look like you can. sorry dude. :-\

ironikart
April 14th, 2003, 11:22 PM
Alternately you could draw the paths in the extrusion editor of Swift. It'll have the same result ultimately.

.soulty
April 15th, 2003, 05:33 AM
smart thinking, i forgot about that , lol

cybergold

i was tracing over some logo's, i can use the E editor, but i find it more useful to import a path. Thanks

You might have to contact a moderator, I'm sure they should be able to include you. There is a sticky post with the rules called swift 3d battle.

ok well I got a couple of hours over the weekend to work on something. I doubt Ill ever get around to it again, so I thought Id post what I got

Since "house cleaning" robots sounded kind of... fruity, I decided to do a "house [of the dead] cleaning" robot take on it. Its a little funky but its kinda supposed to be. Swift cant really handle anything too complicated or anything as garbaged up as I would have liked but with the time I had I figured it serves itself well ;)

ironikart
April 22nd, 2003, 02:08 AM
Been working over the last couple of hours and I've come up with alot of memory issues in Swift. It can't really handle too many objects, but I've crafted together the base of my robot so far. I crashed too often when I applied more textures so I think this will be as good as it gets... until the final render anyway. I might try and add a couple of textures then! :sigh:

cybergold
April 22nd, 2003, 11:26 AM
Wow, :beam: It must have taken you guys a long time to make all those objects in the robot! My 64MB ram can barely handle the objects i'm putting in, so i am starting on a much simpler design. I better get working on that robot.

Didiusthegreat

Peut, I really must start the modeling, I designed it on paper already, but not in swift. 25 is nearing fast....

Swift really doesn't handle lots of objects. Mine is crashing way too much. I've managed to put the pieces of the robot together a little better by modelling them separately, but It's not going to get much more complex than it is already. This PC has 128mb RAM and it is suffering... I've tried the same thing at home (more RAM, less processing speed) and it still suffers!

Thanks for the comments!

What version are you using? 3

2 is a POS. 3 is a lot more stable and has a lot of the much needed fixes, not to mention the heirarchy menu (bliss). It still lacks in a lot of fundamental manuverability but it does away with a lot of the problems that persisted in 2 and brings about some nice features such as the importer and raster renders.

ironikart
April 23rd, 2003, 07:25 PM
I'm using version 3. I found it crashed most when I applied textures. It seems to handle the objects better without the textures.

That heirarchy menu is a godsend! Selecting objects inside other objects is sooo much easier! Still, its not as intuitive as other 3D apps. I suppose you get what you pay for...

.soulty

ironikart: what kind of video card are you using and what direct x drivers are installed?

ironikart
April 23rd, 2003, 09:54 PM
This is a Dell Optiplex gx-150 workstation. Not really made for graphics at all... 8mb card and definately not the latest Direct X drivers. Still I use 3ds max alot on this PC and it runs ok.

.soulty
April 23rd, 2003, 09:56 PM
8mb Card !!!!. :!: maybe thats your problem, even though max works fine, i think the minimum requirements for this app is higher than that, especially if your working with textures and complex models.

I've finished my model as much as I can for this battle. I always seem to run out of time with a few other projects going concurrently. It's a public holiday in Australia tommorow so I'm going to post my final submission now:
