View Full Version : I'm Making Cigarettes!

Hello all,
Just wanted to get some feedback... For my graphic design grad project I'm creating a new line of Canadian cigarettes (hence the warnings) that target the more masculine + refined market - sold at a premium price, of course.
Please note that this is just the beginning. I think this one (my first experiment) might be a bit too busy... Keep in mind it's a flattened view and you would not (looking at it straight on) see the 'Toxic Constituents' or the 'Barcode' side...
My experimentation will continue. Please let me know what you think - but only constructive criticism please, as this is just the very beginning of a long journey.
Here they are:

packaging looks nice, but its here and there. Can you put the warning on the back of the pack? It sorta disrupts the flow.
also, you make cigarettes = you Mr. Bad Man :)

Unfortunately not. As per Canadian law, the warning must take up half of the package and the 'toxic constituents' must remain as shown... Actually, the other side is French, and contains a French warning.
also, you make cigarettes = you Mr. Bad Man :)
Haha. Finally! I partly did this as a reaction to my school pushing environmental sustainability down our throats, with no mention of mental or cultural sustainability, or any other 'good' cause. So I said, **** it, I'm making cigarettes. Sort of a Devil's Advocate project.
Or at least that's what I tell myself...
Thanks for the feedback. I really do appreciate it and the honesty found on kirupa.
PS - It says this post was 'moved'... Did I put it in the wrong place?

Meh. I voted no good before I saw it, simply because anything related to cigarettes is awful in my opinion.
Your design is nice though :thumb:

Agreed. The idea is - this term, make cigarettes, learn the process, marketing tools, etc. Next term, create an anti-smoking campaign, utilizing and subverting what I've learned in the process.
Also, I figured this is school, and I'd never do this in real life (hopefully my morals hold up), so why not play that bastard role...

if i had a digicamera i'd send you a photo of my teeth. i started smoking when i was 29 (i'm 35 now) and my teeth are dead already. smoking tobacco is terrible for your health and the choice is up to you. as an addicted smoker my advice is do not smoke cigarettes. :puzzle:

I thought Phillip Morris changed their name to something incredibly anonymous... like Altrea, or something? Maybe im making things up.

My only complaint is the s in the name. I don't think that symbol really is appropriate (I believe it is used to refer to legal document sections)…

It's called the "Section Sign" - yeah, it's a typographic device used to segment articles in legal documents or something. I just like the abstract allusion to smoke. I might have to think of something else...
Remember, this is all Phase ONE. The end product will probably look completely different.
Thanks!

+ the poll was a bad idea. I'm getting obsessive in checking it. That 'Not So Good' keeps growing...!
:ne:
(I'm very insecure when it comes to my work [obviously]).
PS - Anyone know of anywhere else to post design work for feedback? I was recommended underconsideration.com but i can't seem to find anywhere to post on there. + deviantart.com is more - well, art-based.
thx

Looks good, I'd like to see the first one with the smokey "s" the same size as the rest of the letters. Best to worst:
Two

Three
Four

geez the anti smoker culture is even harder in other places. Everyone knows it's bad and if you smoke it's choice you make when you start. As long as they don't bother me they can smoke all they want.
and the it doesn't make sence what brand it is.

Branding is VERY important. I try to switch around, but always end up back at the same place (cigarette-wise). Granted, I agree, all brands taste exactly the same (good to smokers, horrible to non) - therefore, image is everything.

I know. The actual character goes above and below the cap height, so if i resize it, the proportions aren't the same and it looks awkward. I'll probably end up ditching that S and making my own. Thanks though.

Not that I'm insecure... but that "Not So Good" keeps growing... OK, Mark, deep breaths. For any further comments, could you please post:
1. Something that is working, and;
2. Something that needs work.
Thanks!

I voted - Not Soog Good.
The design is nice but it doesn't look like a pack of cigarettes. The designs are well done and the style is nice but if I smoked I would go with something else, unless I went to Starbucks and drank $15 cups of coffee. I think they look to expensive...but again well designed.

That's the idea... Packaging that removes itself from the act of smoking and more towards an identity to... Identify with.
Oh, and when I said "Premium Price", that refers to a pricing category in Canada into which most cigarettes fall (Players, Export A, duMaurier, etc.) I guess that was a bit misleading.
Thanks though!
PS:
The design is nice but it doesn't look like a pack of cigarettes.
Why does cigarette pack design inherently mean that it / they must look like 'a pack of cigarettes'? The idea was / is to do with differential marketing. They would be sold in cigarette-sized packs, with cigarette warnings, alongside other cigarettes. Therefore, I think one would gather that they are / would be cigarettes.
Think of alcohol. 'Mike's Hard Lemonade', for example, doesn't look like alcohol to me... It looks more like a soda. And the success of that direction speaks for itself.

Think of Marlboro. What do cowboys have to do with smoking? Or Virginia Slims. What does the Women's Movement have to do with smoking? Nothing. These brands have / had carefully alligned themselves with something other than themselves because, to align a cigarette with, well, smoking, just isn't that pleasant...!
:smirk:
Thank you for explaining your poll choice. I won't say anymore, I swear.

Yeah, I realized that. My bad. I kinda went on a tangent. I'll fix that. No wait, I'm lazy. If you want me to, I will.

Sure they'll work, but I would've first thought of an older market. They're so beautiful they'll probably work for just about anybody :P
Oh, and don't worry about it. Just do it in the future ;)

Yes, I definitely have to add more "youthful" elements to create some sort of harmony that (I know you guys will hate this) underage smokers and non-smokers will find appealing.
Thank you very much for the comment. This is a very difficult project (as I imagined it would be) personally, dealing with peers, etc., etc. I thank you for taking the time to understand and accept what I am doing.
Sincerely,

I like the classy feel. I voted elegant. :thumb:
One problem I do have with the cover is that it is not at all coming out as something which targets "Men/boys/anything which is non-female". It totally feels like its something targetting a female market and trying to come off as a sensitive/caring firm. Maybe its because of the image of the pregnant female on the cover. You may try a different warning image.
Just my 2 cents.
