so, here's what i'm trying to do:
i need to make a design for a t-shirt for the intro to guitar class at school that i T.A. for, and for part of it ineed a straight on sillouhette type pic of an acoustic guitar, like THIS (http://www.satoripaint.com/images/PaintFX/guitar3.jpg)
the problem:
whenever i try to extract it, it always comes out choppy. who dod i get it as smooth as possible? normaly i'd blur it, but that wouldn't look good on a shirt....

I think he used the pen tool, outlining it, then going to the tabs "paths" (next to layers) and converted it to a selection. Select inverse it, delete and bada bing bada boom, there ya have it.
Pen tool=pro way to select :)
I used the same basic principle to create this:

This is the sort of thing that should really be vector art (i.e. Illustrator or Freehand).

Not knowing Photoshop very well I would have modeled it in 3d Studio Max lol.

With the green background an easier way is....
SELECT > COLOR RANGE
(use the eyedropper to select the BGcolor) Set Fuzziness Slider to 200 (MAX)
Click OK
Hit Backspace
With that layer selected....
Layer > Matting > Defringe
Using PS CS2 BTW....

doesn't look nearly as crisp or nice though... i think the best way is always going to involve the pen tool, even if you use other stuff as well.
but certainly, people under-utilize the color channels...

Hmmm... actually in Illustrator all you have to do is use the pen tool... do one side then flip horizontally... and you're done.
