I'll be in this battle guys, although if no one hurry's up & starts some rules or an objective then I will start one.
@HankD & Speed: Your footers are too large guys, resize them to 300*60 or smaller.

would anyone be interested in a css based design battle (think csszengarden)? i think it would help narrow things down and the people who participated would have fun. i'd be more than willing to put together the (x)html and content.
so is anyone else up for it?

now it's getting interesting. let's start putting together an idea for content. i'm thinking something generic (without pre-defined visual theme) so people can run wild with it. any ideas?
also, how are people for deadlines? i'm thinking 2 weeks from monday. that way it's sort of a tight deadline to keep people interested, but wide enough to get enough people involved.

im thinking about a product promotion type website - mp3 player or a camera. Pick one for yourself , get logos (e.i. from here (http://www.brandsoftheworld.com/)) and start your engine ;] That way we have 1 content 2. resources
I pick sony walkman ;]

i was thinking more along the lines of an idea, like freedom. something without a visual style. i'm sort of modeling this after css zengarden in that sense.

November 2nd, 2005, 04:27 PM
2 weeks for a subject like freedom? I would have to stop all my commercial stuff ;] If we will be more specific to a subject that 1 is fun 2 easy to do we will have more submissions and more... diversity. Dooing a electronical product or your favorite drink narrows only hard content, there are no limitations to your imagination. Who knows, maybe a passing by CEO of Nikon will notice a superb site for a Nikon D200 and decide to bu it ? ;]
We have to define what kind of battle whis is going to be. Is it a layout+typography battle or finished look thing.

We have to define what kind of battle whis is going to be. Is it a layout+typography battle or finished look thing.i don't really understand what you mean here.
i was just using freedom as an example of something not visually concrete. products and such still have visually concrete elements.
how about a "web standards" theme?

Now that you mentioned that battle you have the proof for what I said
Getting back on the topic, I think most of us deal everyday with concrete themes, like making sites for specific products and such. So perhaps some freedom would be nice. On the other hand, a specific theme or idea will probably make this more interesting in terms of "battle". But it works for me either way.

If someone doesn't mind, let me know the next time one of these pop up. I'm not so hot with this stuff; it would be good for me, and fun so does that mean you're in sen?

Yeah I think it would be a good break from all my work projects... I like the open concept idea, but I think most of the content should be supplied so the sites have some connection between each other.
I was thinking complete site rather than just the visual aspect(not just a comp), but it's up to you guys. Flash, HTML/CSS, or either?

Why not have some content, and we have to build a site based on a certain mood (of our own choosing)?
bwh2
November 3rd, 2005, 06:14 PM
i was thinking all of the content ( (X)HTML ) would be provided. the only files changed would be the stylesheet and whatever images you wanted.

Well if everyone wants to then I guess I'll be in as well. Just let me know when this starts...someone please send me a PM thanks.
I just wont have much time to put in content or build it, since I have to do this at work already...but I'd be up for a design.

November 4th, 2005, 01:06 PM
so whos doing the content?
bwh2
November 4th, 2005, 01:27 PM
i'll do the content. i'm just going to make a .html file and a sample .css file. i've got some time on a flight this afternoon, so i'll whip that up and post it tonight (hopefully) or early tomorrow morning.
i'm still up for an open-ended sort of theme. basically something that doesn't necessarily have visual elements already associated closely with it. so no products, companies, etc. from what i've gathered so far, that's cool with most of you.
would people be up for a "kirupa css/web standards" sort of theme? or does anyone have any ideas not necessarily related to design that they'd like to suggest.

 someone rang? I would do this but the problem is sometimes I have some tiny CSS snags and Emma helps me out... so I'd be crap outta luck if I had one of my snags :P
That... and I don't enter something that I might not win :D ;)
And also, I need a solid concept to design with... it's harder just do things outta the blue, with made up content. So if it was based around a product or company it would be much easier to think of something. Something stupid like a T-bone, porkchop, stapler, paperclip... haha
I think back in the day there was a web battle w/ a redesign of a Sony Walkman site or something like that.

Besides, if I ever get some good ideas, it's because of the coffee :)

apparently its being more of a graphic design contest now (unlike the previous which centered more on developing HTML and CSS without graphics). Basically, you'll just need to design a web interface that will fit the html provided (and the CSS to apply it). I dont think the current HTML/content is the final, though.

Thanks Sen,
It should be safe to start right? I mean even if the HTML content changes, will the structure reamain the same?
Container->Header->content->footer->etc?

I dont know. I hope not, but maybe. The current HTML is pretty basic and doesn't leave much room for wiggling. I would have preferred the old battle repeated with a new theme.

I think you change the look and the theme of the page, from what I got from the contest. Could be different though.
So basically you leave the HTML page alone and only edit the CSS and create whatever images you need.
Is this correct? anyone?

It may be like that. I know that the battle is being modelled on ZenGarden and that's how they do it.

Ok, d'you guys mind if I start this one really going?
Thank you :)
The HTML is here (http://cannedlaughter.net/design.php?css=) to view it with your stylesheet simply stick the URL of your stylesheet onto the end of the URL, for example:
http://cannedlaughter.net/design.php?css=http://example.com/style.css
There is no theme, Organic Lifestyle is a fictional company I made up.
You are alloud to use images.
The CSS file must be valid.
It must work in both Firefox and IE6
Your design must have been created between now and the deadline, you are not alloud to use previous creations.
If there's enough interest the deadline is 1st December, if this is too soon then say so.
Berg
November 18th, 2005, 05:50 PM
ok, gentelmen, start your css engines ;]
guess 1st December is achievable...

Sounds good but can we push the deadline a week? I've got a few other deadlines around then and I would like to relax a bit with this. Haven't done webdesign for quite some time!

Okay, a slow start and a few requests means the deadlines is now 8th December. If people are still interested....
