i really want to find a tutorial on this sort of thing. anyone know of any?
.soulty
October 12th, 2005, 09:00 PM
you could create a graffiti piece for the text instead of using that font, so in the end its original in all aspects. The font is like freehandpen with a urban smell to it, its related to what your going for but not for that particular design. If you create a graffiti text arrangment you can make it work with this particular design.
: something with a little depth that pins in at the ends would look nice i think, sorta like a arc look but with a fresh variation in depth you get in graffiti.
mlk
October 12th, 2005, 09:00 PM
Aye, I agree about the typeface. Could you get an actual grafff from your friend and put it on instead of the 'the faceless few' typeface ?
punkerton
October 13th, 2005, 11:48 AM
i think maybe the problem with the type is the color. it's a little muddled in that area and it makes the type hard to make out. i would try mixing some of the greys you have going on in the type and that would make it POP more and make it gentler on the eyes.

October 13th, 2005, 01:03 PM
Thanks for all the great ideas peeps, my friend was going to send me a basic handstyle title that he made but he hasnt gotten around to it... But i know what you're saying soulty, it would look sick. The problem with putting a piece on the main page like some ofyou have suggested is that i need the title to be easy to read, and something really complicated or chunky may not work. So it was for that reason i used the font as a place holder until dood has sent me something i can use. I'm also going to throw in a lot of crazy characters to spice everything up.
Oh and soulty what res are you using?
@hybrid: I do all of my vector shapes in flash, so all those tentacles and circles and what not were done in flash. I exported the shapes as a png and imported them into photoshop. Thats where I added the text, the tree (in the second one) and the glow as well as the flowers and butterfly (in the first one)
To make the glow I duplicated tentacles layer (as an example) gave it a gaussian blur of 3pixels and then set the blending mode to Hard Light. All of my artwork is pretty much open source so if anyone has any questions on how i did something or acheived a wierd effect just ask me.

October 13th, 2005, 07:45 PM
@ fasterthanlight..
res varies, mostly use 1600X1200 at home. ;)
Voetsjoeba
October 14th, 2005, 12:11 PM
I use 1280x1024, but you'd preferably give it out as 1600x1200 so people can resize them if necessary without quality loss.
fasterthanlight™
October 14th, 2005, 02:06 PM
Problem is, all that vector artwork is as big as it can be... So i'm going to have to create seperate resolutions cause the vector stuff would be too small if you were to just resize the 1600x1200 one. anyways... you guys got any font suggestions?

Dae
October 15th, 2005, 02:15 AM
The last ones very nice, but you'll notice the tree edges are a tiny bit edgy because they were done in flash, vs. what it would look like originally done in photoshop.
But I dont even understand how you made any of those shapes in flash. You use the pen tool to do all of them? because the selection tool in flash doesn't let you select air, and fill into that, because if it does I need to hit a tutorial on the selection tool. :D I've got to say thats gotta be hard.. because photoshop has the same vector capabilities, but to me seems much easier to work with (air selection).

October 17th, 2005, 02:15 PM
Nah, I created the tree in photoshop, used the cutout filter to isolate the tree from the background and then magic-wanded it out of there. If i created the tree in Flash, all the edges would be smooth. I don't know how to de-edgify it, anyone have any ideas?

hey fasterthanlight, how did you do layering of those things? like some stuff is going from top while the same branch has some stuff is going from underneath.
Well when i was creating the original vectors in flash before i added the glow and overlay effects in photoshop, I just put the tree (for example) on its own layer with an empty layer below and the vector tentacles on a layer above the tree. Then i just selected portions of the tentacles that I wanted behind a branch of the tree and cut and pasted in place the section on the bottom layer so that just that one little section is behind the tree. Most of these sections are only like 50px by 50px crops... if you know what i mean.
And thanks nokrev!

I made the tentacles with the line tool... once you draw a line you can control its shape by clicking and dragging the center of the line to make arcs. As for how I did the tree and robot its pretty much the same techniques over and over again. If your looking at the source file double click the groups or graphic symbols to see how I did the layering

Here's an idea............since it is about graffiti and street art, maybe the font is appropriet, but it should stand out from the other art......as if it were spray-painted WITH graffiti by being an off color and have the edges softened a bit.
Perhaps this will show a contrast in the two types of art, and considering that graffiti is hard to read sometimes even without being blended into a background, it will make your title stand out more!
Great job!

Sick Sick Sick!!!
Coming from an old schooler graf artist here too. 92 - 96 baby!!!
But ya that font type like everyone else has said is weak X 10. I never liked that font, i've had it forever and never used it.
But check it...
You said its a graf art site right? Well then its gonna mainly be people who are into graf art, and most of us can read 99% of graf. So i dont really think its too much of an issue for pople to be able to read that text.
Here is what i would say, get a real piece of graph like other ppl have said. And then if u still feel the need to have text in there, use a simple arial black font. i think it would add (if even possible) more class to that artwork.
Anyone ever heard of Spectre? He's a world famous Los Angeles graf artist. He's gone on to do more upper class art, and desiging clothes for big time musicians. But your style is very similar to some of his.

The way you did glow was way too complicated for the average user. So I created this little tutorial for just this occasion! :be:
1: Take your drawing, whatever it is (unless its a full window picture), and double click on the empty space by the title of your layer.
(same thing as Layer > Layer Style > Blending Options
http://www.xvipunk.com/ttl/kirupa/tutlayclick.jpg
2: if you make all your settings like this, you should be in the close vacinity of what you are looking for. As you know, or should know, the settings can vary, depending on the effect you want. But where mine are is a good place to start.
http://www.xvipunk.com/ttl/kirupa/layerstyle.jpg
And there you have it. Glow! No disrespect to "fasterthanlight" his way does work just fine. Its all a matter of preferance.
@hybrid: I do all of my vector shapes in flash, so all those tentacles and circles and what not were done in flash. I exported the shapes as a png and imported them into photoshop. Thats where I added the text, the tree (in the second one) and the glow as well as the flowers and butterfly (in the first one)
