Hi all

I want to put this image

onto a 3d object, but as per a "sticker", so everything outside the white edge needs to be transparent. Anyone know how this can be done?

cheers

If I remember correctly

Make another image where the logo area is completely white and the rest is black, then in 3ds max open the Material Editor. Add the image to the material as usual and then scroll down to the "Maps" rollout and add the black&white image for the "Opacity" map and it's as simple as that.

You sir, are a champ. I shall try this now. Cheers!

Ah, a few problems now. It appears to be casting a shadow, that, or something wrong is with the opacity map. Also it's coming up really dark, any settings I can tweak to fix these?

Is your logo image in the diffuse slot? Looking at your pic it looks like you instanced the logo image into the opacity slot which wont work. Put the individual logo image into the diffuse slot, the black and white mask version into the opacity slot and both settings should be at 100.

Yeah dude its in the diffuse, and both are set to 100!

hmm... I don't have it installed right now... but open the material editor and in the maps rollout there should be a number in the "Opacity" slot as well.. make sure it's on 100

I dno see if that fixes anything... can't think of anything else :-/

edit: ... oh I see

The material is applied to a plane right? Try right clicking it and going into the properties and see what ticking off "Cast shadows" (or something similar) will do

Yeah I deselected that, but I still get the box shadow... though interestingly, i rendered at an angle, and its not there (though could just be due to the light etc). However its still dark...

I mapped it to a plane and it works fine here? Your image has a small grey shadow on the right side that extends beyond the white border in one spot that would need to be edited to black in photoshop but other than that its working fine. Want me to email you the file?

Cheers mate, recieved and works all well. i've taken a look, I think the problem must have something to do with the environment, neither problem will go away!

The material on the object is reflective. The sticker isn't. That'd explain the brightness difference :)

Ah, good call! *smacks head*

Edit - I assume I just adjust the specular level for this?

edit again - i gave it a fallout reflection map.... lessee how this goes.

No idea. Depends on what kind of material you're using. Why don't you try making a duplicate of your existing object's material (the shiny one), and just whack the 'sticker' image onto that. That way, they're guaranteed to be the same.

Thanks mate. Had no luck, as the shell material is some weirded out thing that I can't even remember how I did (not a 3d guy yet, can you tell ;) ), and there is no opacity map spot.

I'll just see if the teacher has a fix this week. Was hoping theres some sort of material that largely 'ignores' the lighting setup, instead just using native scene lighting.
