I just want to add to this, check out this link:

I downloaded their program, and it's REALLY good. However, what I've found is that if you simply use these rules, you won't have an "awesome" color scheme. Sometimes the colors that look best aren't part of a monochromatic, analogous, or triadic scheme, and you can find examples of this easily. This information is important to know, but don't substitute these guidelines for creativity. The most important part about choosing colors is being creative.

well said. altho i am partial to the analogous and monochromatic schemes....altho as of late ive been trying to use conmplimentary low key colors. blah its a weird switch.
