if you are entirely new to AS3 a good start would be some video tutorials, in my opinion.

www.totaltraining.com (http://www.totaltraining.com) and www.lynda.com (http://www.lynda.com) are both excellent video training resources. I, personally, think that Total Training's videos are the best. They are great teachers. Their videos are also high quality with a great interface for navigating through them.

Lynda.com also has excellent teachers as well. Their interfaces suck though. But the vids are what is important. :worried:

I seem to learn quicker with video tutorials.

And i've written a lil class for that, possibly someone would need that. :beer2:

Greetings 2 all.
As some of you probably now, adobe has released the air2beta2 at their labs, which brings new ablities like:

Enhanced support for interacting with printers (beta 2)
Support for TLS/SSL socket communication (beta 2)
Support for the detection of mass storage devices.
Advanced networking capabilities like secure sockets, UDP support, and the ability to listen on sockets.
Support for native code integration.
The ability to open a file with its default application.
Multi-touch and gesture support.
New APIs for access to raw microphone data.
Webkit update with HTML5/CSS3 support.
Global error handling.
Improved cross-platform printing
Improved security and support for enterprise and government standards.
Native process support

I've spend the whole day yesturday playing with the new api and in order that you not waste your time adjusting the sdk's, figuring out how to build an exe/dmg file with full sdk support i've decided to post a little tutorial here.

So, first of all you should start with downloading the air sdk @ http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/air2.html and overlay it for use with Flex SDK.
Here's a nice instruction on how to overlay the air sdk http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/AIR_2:Release_Notes#How_to_overlay_the_Adobe_AIR_S DK_for_use_with_the_Flex_SDK
Once you've done that you are ready to start building apps using the new api.
How to create an air2beta2 file:
1. open your application xml file and make sure you've added the extended desktop support:

<supportedProfiles>extendedDesktop desktop</supportedProfiles>51598
2. compile your application at an AIR file (use the "export release build" option for example)
51600
51599
3. once you've created an AIR file u just compile it to an exe/dmg/rpm file (that's needed for your app to be able to use the new sdk abilities) using the console (well, i did it that way)

adt -package -target native exported_file_path your_air_file_pathExample (for exe):

adt -package -target native C:\AIRSample.exe C:\dev\air\AIRSample.airExample (for dmg)

adt -package -target native C:\AIRSample.dmg C:\dev\air\AIRSample.airExample (for rpm)

adt -package -target native C:\AIRSample.rpm C:\dev\air\AIRSample.airUseful links:
Developer faq - http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/AIR_2:Developer_FAQ
Download air2beta2 sdk - http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/air2.html
How to overlay air sdk - http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/AIR_2:Release_Notes#How_to_overlay_the_Adobe_AIR_S DK_for_use_with_the_Flex_SDK
Your first air2 exe file - http://blog.everythingflex.com/2009/11/17/your-first-air-2-0-exe-file/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+Everythingflex+%28EverythingFle x%29
If you'r on windows, you can use my small app that converts air => exe/dmg/rpm i.e. it's a GUI for the adt for those who don't like console usage. I called it AIRPackager (http://chargedweb.com/labs/files/AirPackager.exe).

Hope 2 help/save yr time.
Nice apps building :b:

Ps: you can also download the source files of my sample PowerOff application that uses the NativeProcess class that's showed on the screenshots here (http://chargedweb.com/labs/files/PowerOff.zip)

When it comes to coding I've used Crimson Text Editor (http://www.crimsoneditor.com/) for years as it let me write AS, HTML, CSS, PHP and C# files. The last release was in 2004 and sometime in the past year the syntax section of the site went down. Crimson worked with different programming languages via a couple of external files. Each language had two of these files which defined its syntax. As it stands now I can't find any ActionScript 3 syntax files so I'm left with either making my own or finding another editor.

I thought it would be fun to see what everyone else likes using. If anyone uses an editor that's not in the list then make a new post here and I'll add it to the poll. Please note that I will remove any non-contributive posts to this thread to keep it concise. I'm going to leave this poll open indefinately but remember you can only vote once.

2. Should i put my AS3 code in a package, and not on the flash timeline?

3. Where do i save my .as, .fla, .php files? I am using WAMP, which uses "C:\wamp\www" directory

I've written an interactive coding game in Flash, playable in browser:
http://www.societygames.com/codealong

It's designed to have you coding within a minute of starting the game and it skips straight to fun code. All code affects a graphical world, so no more boring text output. It also has a pretty nice GUI to help you out with exceptions, syntax errors, etc.

Thanks, I hope this helps you learn AS3.0. I appreciate feedback, too!
