a logo should still get its point across if it is purely black and white. Where is the name of the organization? What you have there is a graphic.

looks nice, but when i think of a "logo" i think of simple recognizable shapes, colors, and typography. i'd say what you've got here is a little too complex. you should also consider that a logo should work at many different sizes. will this logo work when scaled down to 1" ? probably not.
there's some good elements in your design, but i think you need to simplify it.

I thought so too... My client wants to use a photo in the logo, and this was an attempt to kind of meet them in the middle. Here are some other ideas I am kicking around.... The graphic will be used for a book cover first, then hopefully a logo theme shall be created..... (or vice-versa)

yeah, that's a bit 'OTT' from a logo.

i like the cross in the first image, though - how about just singling out the cross and making it into it's own logo ? it make look good greyscale, like in "logo-2.0.jpg", but i don't know - i'm no real designer :(.

take elements from it, crop it and tone it down a bit and you can keep its feel but with a more traditional logo way
