Yeah, they did have a private beta you could sign up for. According to Mike Chamber's response to one of my questions (http://weblogs.macromedia.com/mesh/archives/2005/06/how_to_get_on_t.cfm), you can't say if you are actually in the Beta. That's why you may not see the "I have the beta copy of Flash 8!" posts in the forums.
