I want to install Flash Player 8, but I am hesitant that it may mess me up when testing...
should I stick with 7 or am i being overly paranoid? or is there a way to have several players installed and switch between them?

if you're worried about testing, you should use the new player because soon, lots of people will have it installed and if something isnt working right for you, its better to find out what that is now while its still in beta so you can let them know and they can have it fixed

I've only found one problem with the Flash 8 Player....when it's installed I can no longer search the Flash MX help files.
Remove the version 8 player, reinstall version 7, and the Search java applet window pops up. Install version 8 and the Search java applet window fails to open.

I just download Flash Player 8 Beta, and some swf exported in 7 don't work. They use loadVar etc, so i think that's what's messing it up. And I know its Flash Player 8, thats messing it up because, when i test in MX 2004, it works (using flash player 7), but when i view it in a HTML document, they don't work anymore (cause now it's using Flash Player 8)
So yeah, just somthing I noticed. Guess I'll have to get rid of Player 8 until Flash 8 is released.

Make sure you let Macromedia know what's not working. That's the reason the beta is out there.

The problem of the non-appearing Search window has now been solved...I'd exchanged a number of emails with Macromedia about this issue and they were unable to replicate the problem until one of them suggested that it "might" be something to do with the stricter Global Security Settings that Flash 8 now uses.
On a whim, I decided to add C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Flash MX\Help to the "Always trust files in these locations" box and, lo and behold, the Java Search applet now appears. So it would seem that the SWF residing in the top-left of all the MX help pages (the one with the Contents, Index and Search buttons) was using the older security rules - presumably to talk back and forth between the Java applet. See this link about Flash content stored on your computer. (http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager04.html#117560)
So now I'm happy and if, like me, you've still got an earlier version of Flash (5, MX, 2004), and use the Search utility quite frequently when it comes to writing actionscript that works, you know how to solve it yourself. You can adjust your Global Security Settings by visiting the link above - the Settings Control Manager is at the top of that page.
However it still leaves a lot of people with the older versions who don't visit this forum so it's an issue that Macromedia should address. Perhaps a note on the Flash Player download page when it eventually goes live.
Glad we (that's me and the Macromedia bug-hunters) got to the bottom of it though I was beginning to tear my :hair: out!

Thanks for posting that. I'm sure MM will have a technote about it. But, like you said, people may not find the solution and be stuck with a broken help swf.

Or just install it on Internet Explorer and use Firefox with Flash Player 7.

I found another Flash Player 8 bug. When you have a link in a dynamic text box, it does not work when your .swf is published in a HTML file.
It does work in Live Preview, and in the standalone player.

Yep, done that. Not that they acknowledged my comments or anything..... :|

They should look at everything sent. Whether or not you actually get a response is another thing alltogether, especially if its a known issue or not important enough to worry about at the moment (crashes etc have higher priority).

Just confirmation of what senocular said really...I didn't get an acknowledgement until a few days after I notified them so presumably they were busy filtering and prioritising all the bug reports. When they did get in touch it was pretty frequent, given the time difference and my availability to check email, so full marks to them.

I fiddled around with the settings in Flash Player 8 and the external links now work... I think it was something to do with allowing cross-domain access.

flash 8 is going to come out in a few days, and people are going to want to publish in flash player 8, so when is flash player 8 (not beta) coming out?
