i am making a full flash site for a bar/group of bars in liverpool on mathew street. However I am not sure on my layout, my concern is that the pop-up approach does not have much flexibility when it comes to content.

I will be having a guestbook/message board for example, which I am thinking will need more room.

(the splash page will be changed, and "news" and "hardys" are the only sections complete)

I like it so far, but I would definatly stray away from the popup idea. My suggestion would be to make the red on right go top to bottem (on a regular window) and have the content sort of slide out. Just an idea, good start :D

i like the pop up it looks good, although i would consider a different from for the text that one is a little too edgy.

Just a suggestion, maybe making the pop-up a little longer in height and adding a few pics would give it a bit more pizzaz..

for the index page, maybe doing the same as you did with the red going horizonally across the page as to tie it all together. the red inside looks somewhat out of place when the splash is just B&W.

i would change the enter site text to match the other text in the site too. as for the text i mentioned earlier this site HERE (http://www.04.jp.org/) has some good free flash fonts which may be of use to you.

its pretty good in my opinion. Today I've been having trouble getting pop ups to run, so I was a little hesitant to click the link, but it worked anyway. I think that this would look better in the main window, with a nice transition from the splash. Great how you didnt go overboard with the details. Feels proffessional. It was a bit hard to see the little scroll bar, but its still good. Not my favourite colours, but good work!

Moo. it would be really appreciated if you could help me out with the bugs you mention, i am desperate for this to look proffessional, as i want to present it to my boss, as i work at this bar... i don't want to make myself look a fool or have egg on my face.

I take it the pop-up idea is a no go. Maybe it was a non starter as people are put off by pop-ups. Full screen then. I will explore the fonts as mentioned, thanks. the splash page is temporary, but if i am making the site full screen, then there is no need for a splash page.

i have a lack of pictures for the actual place, but would it be appropriate to use stock images and change them later?

any ideas?

thank you

jb

Ok man, what I would start off by doing to make an overall sence of visual proffesional presence, is change the 'enter' button, remove the text, it makes it look like youve built it on one of those geocitie accounts. Have that image saying: 'hardys' as the enter button that would be a big improvment with tiny effort.
As for the pop-up site itself, I like it alot, the menu annimation is very slick and simplistic, also the scan lined image is really effective to your design.
Even though, to make it look better I would advise when the pop-up comes up that in the loading area:
http://img277.imageshack.us/img277/2736/16dv.jpg
get some content or text or images there! it would improve the whole thing so much!
Now by the sounds of it, your imployer has done a bad job of giving you content and resourses, so its very good that uve done this well with the poor help you have/rather havnt recieved.

As for stock images try this site: http://www.sxc.hu/
its very good for photography and you could touch any image up easily on photoshop :)

My personal fave part of your site is the scroll bar wich is very nice :D
Well, the only problem with your site is that you havnt got anything to put in it :|.
As for the bugs, over several inspections there doesnt seem to be that many, well hardly noticable.
If you are still worried about this you could pm me the fla file and I could check through it for you :)

One last thing...maybe try and make it so the buttons dont go into bald font when you press them :thumb:

Hope ive been of help dude.

moo. you have been a very valuable help to me, however, i need to explain.

my employer does not know i am doing this, as this gives me the largest time frame imagineable... the only website that the company has (or is linked to) is www.mathew.st which i cannot understand. They advertise the bar alongside the main competitors, giving it no edge. This is why I want to add a more direct, professional, site.

This is the reason I have little content. I plan on showing the site when nearly finished (apart from real pics of bar etc.) to my bosses and hope they like it.

I am still unsure about the popup...

as i said, the splash is only temporary, i have no intention of keeping that. slightly hurt by the geocity shout, that was low man, hehe.

but thank you again for your comments. I think i need a more dynamic way of showing the information. It seems run of the mill.

prefer the second layout....

as for blank images, you mean its loading images when no image to load?! i didnt notice! but a simple if, else statement would sort this

i am using a script that was developed here on kirupa by a number of people including scotty, i have added a preloader bar and text, but thats all I have changed, but at the end of the array I still have a blank picture...

I have started on a message board, which I am not using flash for.

I actually like the pop up of the site. I also really like the "edgy-ness" of the text...it makes it look really crisp and clean...it looks great!

The topic for the image gallery is here:

http://www.kirupa.com/forum/showthread.php?t=57082

and only one person in the topic commented on the blank image problem.

i think it has something to do with one of two things,

1) in the Array, there is a comma after the last value, however, I have tried modifying the php to remove the last space and comma, substr($string, 0 , 2); but the last photo is then ignored, and a blank image is still there.

2) it may have something to do with this part of the script:

MovieClip.prototype.changePhoto = function(d) {
this.pIndex = (this.pIndex+d)%this.pArray.length;
if (this.pIndex<0) {
this.pIndex += this.pArray.length;
}
this.onEnterFrame = fadeOut;
};

any ideas?

I have added a photo to the background and the photo gallery section? what you think?

I think it's very neat looking, and I definatly think the second one is much better.

I do find it slightly confusing that the navigation options appear again on the side in the gallery.
I firts though it was different galleries, but then noticed that it is the main navigation that just changed place.
It sould work if you actually see the links moving into a new position.
Otherwise I would think it's better with just a back button to get back to the main page or esle keeping them aligned horizonatlly like on the main page, but just moved down a bit.

But...thats just the only minor issue I did reflect over....all in all nice work.
