open up any image editor (PS, Fw,...) zoom more than 800%, use the pen tool to draw, your imagination and your skills ;)

Don't you mean the pencil tool guig0? The pen tool is for creating paths. A 1px pencil tool allows you to create non anti-aliased pixel dots.

Its a dot by dot process, just click click click and away you go to create yur pixel character.

Thats ok, you were just shorthanding the pencil... see pen-cil... which shortened becomes pen.
