View Full Version : Vector Illustration & a 'Hello'

July 22nd, 2005, 11:14 AM
Hello everyone, this would be my first post on this site. I was browsing around for flash help sites since I am in the process of redoing my website to be more user friendly (and smaller file size). Mostly I do Vector Illustrations and photo manipulations as a Graphic Designer. Look for my site to come up soon. Here is an illustration to hold you over till then:
http://www.zx2-riders.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10155/Porsche-997-Webpost.jpg
Enjoy, and C&C are welcome.
EDIT: Outline images, screen shot of layers, and close up images are all on page 3. About half way down.

Thanks for the positive feedback guys. Hopefully my site comes together quickly. it has been a while since I have made a flash site, probably a little under a year.
Tommy_S, nice site you have. I like you illustrations. Although yours are more stylistic, i try to go more realistic to push the envelope that much farther almost tricking the eye. Thanks for the good replies :)
Thanks, Tom

very nice. only crit i would have is the red part on the rotors (? i don't know anything about car parts :\), it looks like someone bled to death on them.
did you use mostly gradients or gradient mesh?
CkretAjint
July 22nd, 2005, 01:54 PM
Neither.
It is 100% shapes wth solid colors. All hand placed without ANY auto tracing. every last bit of the image, body panels, lights, interior, rims, tires, everything. I am learning how to use gradient meshes now, but I get more control out of the colors with individual shapes. I will post an outline version later.
and the calipers are supposed to be red, they are poweder coated that color. Porache red.

Very nice work... if you did that without mesh's then my hats off to you. Learn them well, once you do it'll take your work to a whole new level, Im excited to see where you go with them as you learn.
Welcome to the forums.

Just wondering: Since you didnt use any mesh's... how many layers are in there?!

hey dude welcome to the forums! :)
Regarding the porsche the front/side indicators black stroke is a little too thick and i think the brake discs and calipers could improve with shading (depth) other than that a really nice job :thumb:
I too have created a illustrator car using just shapes and variation of shades (greyscale) also before illustrator had transparency, lol. (illustrator 9)

RE: Front calipers being too big
--I'm pretty sure they're supposed to be because when you brake all the weight shifts to the front, and ultimately, over the front wheels, bigger brakes = better stopping power. I could be wrong though, Porsche's engines are in the back...
mprzybylski
July 23rd, 2005, 02:47 PM
well the front caliper looks too big, the back one is fine. im aware that the calipers are red, and i have no problem with that, just a bit big on the front one is all.
and now that soulty mentioned it, that stroke for the front light is relatively big as well. maybe it would look better like a darker yellow, not full black?

Sorry Tommy, but that's it--I really think that sometimes you can be such a contrascending a-hole. You never like to fully complement someone and even in this post, you said "nice image" but you couldn't just leave it at that--you have to say "2 years ago" as if everyone else is below you and you're the best and everyone else "could do better" and I think a lot of other people on these forums know it too and would agree with me.
People have actually said on the Critiques forum that they dread hearing from you. Just because you've created a style for KirupaForum and had an award, it doesn't give you the right to make yourself out to be some kind of a god.
I've never heard you give someone a straight-out "brilliant work, i really like it" kind of post. You'll say "nice work" but you always have to put in a proverbial "but i could do better" and sometimes I really resent you for that.
I don't mean to be out of line and I'd be shocked if I was banned for this as I've thought this through, given examples and haven't just exploded and been unreasonable so I hope some people will maybe realise that.

Sorry Tommy, but that's it--I really think that sometimes you can be such a contrascending a-hole. I saw that but just let it roll off my back. Although he says he did things like that "2 years ago" nothing on his site is remotely close to being as detailed as that. But to each there own. Thats what marks art so great. Everyone has their own style and influences which lets us create art in differetn ways.
Anwho, here is the outline image I promissed. Sorry for being so late. There are 1144 Paths, and a total of 6844 points, only 2 compound shapes, and 24 transparent objects. All hand placed of course. Enjoy

Thanks for the feed back. I came here for inspiration. My old site, that I never put 'online' was SO huge, it could only be mailed out as a demo of my work to potential clients. It was around 12mb with images and animation. Took a long time, IMO, to download. So I am looking to make a much smaller file size site that is more user friendly.
This illustrations took about 25-35 hours.

Great work, but first off can i be really thick and say ... what program did you use, was it illustrator or fireworks or something ??
And how did you get the lines so accurately in proportion without tracing ANYTHING or at least using an image as reference ??
Not knocking or doubting you, just pretty baffled how u got it so accurate.
And the pic of the girl (whoever posted that) thats amazing, really good, can you guys point me in the way of a good tute on achieveing this sort of vector art ?
CkretAjint
July 26th, 2005, 11:15 AM
I used Adobe Illustrator 10. And i did use an image for reference. Always use reference images for projects you do. Then your not left guessing what should go where, and it wont look funky.

Cool, so im guessing you kinda trace over the image in illustrator making all the many shapes which make up the shading..
Regardless how it was done, hats off to you, its a great job.
I only use PS really but might have a go at illustrator now ive seen an example of what it is capable of.

I'd just like to say.. as an aspiring vector artist myself it's nice to see works of art like this presented by nice guys like you. Not only is your image beautiful but you go so far as to show us lines details and various close ups. Though I'm sure I could have figured out how to do something like this I think it's great that you explain how, so as to allow others to aspire to something similar. I fully intend on creating a semi photo-realistic car of some sort in the near future now.

Thank you eveyone for all of the positive feedback. I am glad I can share my talents with you. I am hoping one day that I can do vector illustrations full time. But it is hard finding people that are willing to pay for this style.
But none the less, people asked for more, so you get more:
Not as detialed as the first one. I did this one before the porsche. and right now I am working on an image of Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl (from the movie) I will post it once I am done. but it is taking a long time due to the hair. Look for it in the near future.
C&C are always welcome.
2,683 Paths. 16,578 Points. Only 6 Transparent objects and 22 Gradients (mostly the windows). Again, this was created without any filters of any kind, or any tracing program. All points were hand placed and manipulated and then each individual vector shape was hand colored.

In my opinion, the Opel illustration is infinetly cooler than the Porsche. It's hard to believe it's vector because it's got this kinda hand drawn, colored pencil look to it. I've seen too many uber realistic car vectors, and I'm sick of them. I appreciate the hard work that goes into one, but my tastes have changed. And they are mostly of exotic supercars. Why can't someone do a vector of a beat up rusty 57 chevy pickup. I'd love to see some close up pictues of the Opel.

Just pick an area and start outlining all the color variations. Normally I try and do the lower portions on the cars first, like wheels and fenders then doors and just work my way around till it is all done. Also, only do about 2-3 hours a day, that way I come back to it fresh each day and start on it and i have to make changes from the previous day I can right away without being to far in advanced. Also dont be afraid to start over on an area if you must.

As with anything handmade, cars, houses, etc, I don't see traces ever producing something with the character nor aesthetic refinement of a hand done trace...

Currently at this time I do not. But I am hoping to once I get my site up and running. I am having a hard time placing the vector images into flash MX. It seems to drop a few shapes here and there, making the image appear in complete. and it is REALLY ANNOYING ME!!!! So I think I am just going to have to use PNG files for my images, which sucks cause they are not as clear.

haha, no i havent like touched the site, ive been working on other sites more, heh. I should really finish that site haha. And, i visit kirupa every day, i just rarely post. I use Illustrator 10, without any gradient meshes, and very few gradients (mostly windows and interior items)
I am in the process of working on a walk through on how to do this type of work. Unfortunately it has to go on my website, and I am working on getting that dne. I have come to the conclusion that an HTML style website would better suit my needs. But this means I have to learn HTML (Dreamweaver) I just finished reading the H.O.T. book on it and plan on whipping out a quick site in the next few days (hopefully).
I will keep everyone posted.

This is my first post, and I wanna say GREAT illustration.
It's not only because I'm a Porsche fan, but also because you've donne a great job.
Congratulations!

Good work with the Porsche but don't try to limit yourself with Illustrator yeh? I think your established with Illustrator but if you keep creating individual pieces, it might start to get boring. Try in the future to integrate the vehicle with surroundings or a juxtaposition of objects or traffic or nature. You could really make it a great montage.
Otherwise, your doing great. Keep going.

I use Illustrator 10, without any gradient meshes, and very few gradients (mostly windows and interior items)

ok, no need to panic. a vector illistration (to the extent of my knowlage) is a drawing with shading done shade by shade.;)
