View Full Version : THE K-LLABORATION 2.0

GW02
July 22nd, 2005, 03:50 AM
IMPORTANT! Please read the rules even if you think you know what's going on!

Alright, most of you know what went on with the original K-LLABORATION (http://www.kirupa.com/forum/showthread.php?t=81787) before it fell apart due to complications. Well, Paddy Duke, the visionary who created the project, was eventually forced to back out of the project, and I volunteered to take over it and try to keep the ball rolling. B3NKobe is also helping to keep things running smoothly. This time, the system will be just slightly different, and more clear guidelines will be in place as to how contribution works. With that, let's get started!

Introduction
The K-llaboration is a project to create the longest, high-quality seamless digital image in the world. This means that you will not be able to find any obvious breaking point between the images that it is composed of. It is a collaboration amongst many of the members of the KirupaForum, and anyone here is welcome to join. All submissions will be screened for quality before they are added.

Contribution rules
This project is primarily a Photoshop exchange - any other tools must be cleared by anyone managing the project first (that would be myself or B3NKobe), but should be acceptable. The image will remain exactly 400 pixels tall at all times. Each member will use the previous contributor's source file and add anywhere around 600 pixels to it. The extra 600 pixels will be used to create their contribution. Each contribution may modify up to 150 pixels of the right edge of the previous contribution to create the seamless blend into their 600 new pixels of image. For convenience, try to keep the layers for each contribution in its own grouping folder (or two, if necessary) so that they may be easily removed when it becomes unnecessary. Also for convenience, please crop anything that wasn't modified from the source file (hence each source file should be no more than 850 pixels wide). Again, this is a high-quality project. If I feel that any contribution isn't up to the standard already set, I will not add your entry. If the guidelines need further clarification, please feel free to ask.

Queue list
The queue list was one of the big reasons the previous project choked up. Instead of keeping the old list format, the project will now use a kind of "pool." People who wish to contribute must have over 100 posts of non-spam, and will either post on the thread or PM me or B3NKobe, and they will be added to the pool of waiting contributors. When the previous member completes and posts their entry, the first person who was in the pool and is eligible for contribution to post that they would like to take the next piece will be the next contributor. Each member will have 1 week to complete their entry, or they will forfeit their chance and be put back in the pool. This system ensures that the K-llaboration will attract mostly active members and that the project will keep moving along. Unless specifically allowed, users will not be allowed to contribute multiple times, at least within the span of a few entries.

The current pool consists of the following members:

Revee
onsitus
sameerzs
Vexir
djn
Sammo
RadioactiveChimp
prancer
thesparky007
SlowRoasted
e-sarbak
Disco-Stu
grinch
ExoVoid
mrE
dr_vroeg
Steven_jd
xxviii
cr125rider

Remember that this list is NOT in order of appearance. There are no "turns," or "orders." If you're confused by this statement, read the rules! :)

The latest .psd can be found at:

Last up to bat was: Fork
Currently up to bat is: <your name could be here!>

Go get 'em, boys (and girls)! Let's make Paddy Duke proud! :D

So a few more notes not part of the main rules thread.

My server's having temporary issues, so the Flash will be up by Saturday night.

I'm looking for someone (preferably someone I've seen around a lot around here) to help me run this thing.

Also, you should know how this works now: The first person in the pool to post after this post gets to claim the next entry! Go for it!

Good job Gwing. :A+:
Well, I did try to open fork's psd but I am getting an error message "Could not complete your request because the layer is not a valid text layer". I'm using Photoshop CS. Any idea on where is the problem? :puzzle:

GW02
July 22nd, 2005, 01:40 PM
Krilnon: you've already contributed to the K-llaboration, fairly recently too, so I think I'll give it a bit before you can contribute again.

onsitus: Hmm it's not my .psd, you'd have to ask dr_vroeg. It looked like it worked fine for me though...

And since onsitus was the first one to post, he will be the next contributor... you have a week starting now. :)

Krilnon
July 22nd, 2005, 01:53 PM
Yeah, I was planning to wait a while anyway before submitting again. :)

GW02
July 22nd, 2005, 02:32 PM
I think I'll need to create a "waiting pool" for people like you, to give you a few weeks before submitting again. We'll see. :P

ExoVoid
July 22nd, 2005, 10:10 PM
The reason you're getting the font problem is either: You don't have the font, or he was using CS2, from what I understand. Does the file still open?

onsitus
July 23rd, 2005, 06:38 AM
I thought about the font not being installed but from what I read PS should then give me the choice to replace it with one I do have. If someone would be kind enough to replace the font by a common one and repost the psd, I could see if it is the problem or if it is a version incompatibility. I will pm Dr_voeg anyway.
I will keep you updated. :thumb:

Sounds Great, Id also like to submit another entry to this, but one question, are you still going to be continuing on from the old K-Lab? Or starting fresh?

GW02
July 23rd, 2005, 02:51 PM
Continuing. Probably should've made it clearer. :)

In fact, would you be willing to resume your helping position?

July 23rd, 2005, 03:06 PM
So are all the entries from the last k-llaboration all added up now and it's awaiting new entries? Just wondering cause I did an entry like 18.7 trillion millenia ago and I just never got a chance to see it :P

Nice to see some more clear rules and I hope it flourishes this time, looks like it's in good hands :)

GW02
July 23rd, 2005, 05:06 PM
Yes, this is a continuation of the K-llaboration. I'll have the flash up tonight so it'll be clearer. :)

harhar, [curse curse spit spit] forgot you could edit 150 px of the other persons, screwed that up good, starting from scratch (again)

EDIT:EDIT:EDIT:EDIT
ARGH! ^$&%* Dr. Vroeg cannot fit any more private messages in his inbox, and I need the font he used, does anyone have "Code39OneText"?
If I can't get that font, my ideas are gone, and I've just found out that I'm using old ideas anyway, I was basing mine around an eye, and I extended the canvas to see Fork's entry, which was also an eye... getting very frustrated, if I can't get that font soon I'm gonna have to pass it on, because I can't blend it the way I want to without it... :(

GW02
July 25th, 2005, 03:22 PM
Well it looks terribly similar to an old font that came with Microsoft Office... I can't remember the name of it though. Started with M. Like Marquee or Margritte or something.

solomarvin
July 25th, 2005, 03:45 PM
Ok.

I'm incredibly new to this site. I jux felt like opening up PS. If this is incorrect or w/e..or if it sucks..jux simply delete. Nothing to hurt my feelings, instead adding to my portfolio.

http://www.solomarvin.com/toblack-friendship.jpg

It's something rather easy to continue with, and I thought it looks pretty nice. To Black-Friendship. Like I said..if it sucks or inaccurate..please delete or I will.

I took a way different approach, and completly changed it all up.

If it is correct, I will post PSD.

Cheers :)

I really like your entry mate, as im second in charge of this I would like to give you permission to use this, my reasons why I would want to break the rules:

"You have 7 posts, in the K-LLAB 1.0 we had alot of members who would join Kirupa Forums and on their second post they would ask to join, but when it came to there go, they were impossible to get hold of.

However you have gone ahead and done an entry already, I think thats great, and it looks very neat"

Although the final decission will be upto G_Wing02, you have my pass on it.

solomarvin
July 26th, 2005, 12:51 AM
I hope he lets me, but if not I understand.

As a administrator for alot of different events, and forums, I understand it is often hard to trust the new comers.

I do plan on staying at Kirupa, but the point is to have 100 posts of non-spam. I visit the forums honestly..10 times a day. I jux don't post that often. I'd rather read the knowledge thats posted, then to post my 2 cents :D I jux post when needed. I'm not an attention whore, I'm just addicted to photoshop. Thats all.

Thanks.

Cheers :)

GW02
July 26th, 2005, 05:08 AM
I actually do like your entry, solomarvin.

As long as Exovoid has no complaints, I think I'll just let you have it... but everyone else should remember that this is NOT how it's supposed to be done, and it is by no means a go ahead to just start tugging at my heartstrings and posting your entries outside the rules! :)

ExoVoid
July 26th, 2005, 07:06 AM
Hey, no problems here, You're making the rules, just be cautious on who you allow to break the rules, but it's not my place to say yes or no.

GW02
July 26th, 2005, 03:48 PM
Well the only reason we put the "newb-restriction" in place was that they were usually unskilled and eventually when it was their turn they weren't even here anymore anyways.

solomarvin appears to be an exception to both rules. Out of fairness, I'll let you take the next one as soon as he posts the .psd.

Which reminds me that I should probably see about getting the flash up now that my server is free of FTP issues.

Well the only reason we put the "newb-restriction" in place was that they were usually unskilled and eventually when it was their turn they weren't even here anymore anyways.

Erm people just don't magically learn photoshop when they come to kirupa, i'm sure a lot of newcomers know a lot more than some people here like you and me.

I think it would be fair to let <100 join in, and if you want a restriction just tell them to submit here before.

solomarvin

Is that it?

Good job Solomarvin. I will have to say only one thing(:sure: ). You should try to get rid of those white pixels left over above the shaking hands.
xGwing
The extra 600 pixels will be used to create their contribution. Each contribution may modify up to 150 pixels of the right edge of the previous contribution to create the seamless blend into their 600 new pixels of image. OKay guys, I don't want to be mean, and I know I said that I'd bowed out of this project. But I'm still keeping an eye on it and it IS my baby. I would like to exert my executive power (if I have any) and veto the last two entries as I don't feel they meet the standard of the rest of the entries. In particular solomarvin's piece, which falls considerably short of the quality I would have accepted were I in charge. Dr Vroeg's entry is well done, but just isn't K-LLABORATION material in my opinion.

Sorry if I offended either Dr. Vroeg or Solomarvin but it's the reason I put the rule in place in the beginning. If I don't have any say in this thing anymore feel free to send my proverbial *** on it's way.

Paddy has rule over all.

I really didn't like dr_vroeg's entry (sorry) in the first place but I kept it only because Paddy Duke seemed to have accepted it. Solomarvin's looked good in comparison, so I took it as the standard.

So, in accordance with Paddy's decision, the past two entries are now invalid.
I'll dig up the .psd tomorrow morning when I'm not falling over out of exhastion.

edit: I went and dug it up anyways.
I had half a mind to revert back to xxviii's entry, but since general consensus liked fork's entry, I have reverted to fork's entry. ExoVoid is still the current contributor, and has a week starting now (again).

wow...I must say that hurts. so much for the democratic way but oh well. To each there own however if we are all being "open" now I must say that the "back to primitive" entry and PRStudio's are not all that wonderful either. I agree with you, although back then it took weeks to get an entry done by anyone, so those pieces were added simply to keep the project growing. If they were submitted now I would probably not accept them. Sorry if I hurt your feelings.

It's gotta be good. No point in even bothering with the project if it ends up looking rubbish.

I actually liked Onsitus's entry. And if the collaboration isn't representative of Kforum members, good or bad, whats the point? Sorry, I'm with Krilnon on this one.

Edit:

Alright, actually G-Wing, I'd like to withdraw from this "K-LLABORATION", because its really not a kirupa.com collaboration anymore, its too selective. You guys turned down a lot of great entries which people put time and effort into, and so it really ruins the whole spirit of this thing. A piece of work shouldn't have to be "accepted" into this, as long as they truly did work on it. As for it being "your baby" Paddy, let it be yours, but if its going to be selective as this you really are not going to succeed.

Sorry guys, not going to work for me.

Krilnon
August 3rd, 2005, 09:26 PM
I agree it would be nice to have a good looking piece, but i'ts going to be less enticing for people to enter given what's happened so far. It seems like you're trying to turn this thread into http://www.lobby45.org

You can do what you'd like, I'm just offering my thoughts on the issue.

Maybe instead of denying people you could offer some suggestions to improve their design and see if that helps. I gotta agree with Krilnon and Vexir though with this kind of project for a community like this you need to be more open.

August 4th, 2005, 01:10 AM
I like the whole Idea here, but I think any entry is good a one. Who cares if you don't like what the person made. I thought that was kind of the whole Idea anyways. Differnt people's art. So patty duke & g-wing why don't you be a little more open? Not everyone liked van gogh but look how popular he is now. So screw the trendy art. I say make what you want.

GW02
August 4th, 2005, 01:55 AM
Hey guys:

This is Paddy Duke's project. He gets final say here, whether you agree or not. I firmly believe in what he is trying to do, and I believe that the standard that's already been set proves that it can be done. I think that some of you are being put off simply because you THINK you can't do it. I know that if you really try, you can do it. However, if this really gets nowhere in the next 2 weeks, even with the new system wherein almost anyone can step in at any minute, I will no longer attempt to promote or manage it. :-/

The standard's been set. The community here at KirupaForums is capable of achieving that standard. Just do your best, and if you don't succeed, do better. It's a learning experience, not just a place for gurus to show off their stuff. We're not looking for "trendy art," but we're not accepting something that is completely misrepresentative of what we're trying to do.

Thanks for at least taking the time to take a look here, and thank you for being around, Paddy.

dr_vroeg
August 4th, 2005, 10:11 AM
the other option for those that are looking to start a revolution is to make their own thread/collaboration in which any entry will be accepted. I am on the fence on this one. If you want Kirupa to be introverted and only the people of this site to be impressed with it's work then like paddy said "what's the point". But if this were to make a New Masters of Photoshop entry and there was a few in the K-LLABORATION that looked like crap then it would discredit the site and those who worked to create the images. (this coming from a guy whos design got shot down :hitman:)

This is an open forum and no one really "ownes" anything. If the creator of this thread wishes to add or dismiss anything it's his call not yours...

Like I said in the beginning if you want to start your own thread go ahead and call it the bi-product-llaboration where all the deformed entries can be found...now that might make us all realize just what a poor quality entry is. (remember I got denied but I agree with paddy...even though he hurt my feelings...but that was when I was younger and more juvenile) :D

Krilnon
August 4th, 2005, 02:42 PM
I don't think anyone has denied that the thread starter has the right to do whatever he wants, and GWing_02 is also letting Paddy judge. I think people were merely suggesting changes, not demanding them :)

paddy.
August 4th, 2005, 03:35 PM
There seems to be a misunderstanding here about what I intended the K-llaboration to be. It's supposed to be not just an incredibly long image, but also a high quality piece of art. Your entry doesn't have to be a photo manipulation, it can be anything, a vector illustration, a photo, anything you like, as long as it is seamless and HIGH QUALITY. I am also very open about what the content of the entries is. I really don't mind what is in your piece if I think it looks good.

So, no I don't want to accept sub-par entries. I want it to be exclusive to people who can produce nice pictures. It has to look good.

Well I did mine a couple months ago so it's been a while. And I'm asking to be put at the end of the list, so I don't see why it should be a problem unless there's a one entry per contestant rule :)

No need to get huffy there Gwing, I've read the rules a few times. I get the concept of the pool thing but I'm just saying I'd like to let a few people go and then I'll jump in if it starts getting a little stagnant or something. So I guess I'm really just asking to be added to the pool since anyone in the pool can go when they want to a degree.
So now that I've asked the same thing in different words can I get added?

August 5th, 2005, 07:25 AM
I also think Paddy is right to be selective. I am still in the learning processs of ps, I did say so in the first k-lab thread and I also said myself that I don't feel being up to it but still I wanted to try, for me it is a good way of learning and I won't give up because my pic has been refused. So I do hope that I can stay on the list and try again at a later date. ;)

Sure you can be in. Two things tho:

1. Be sure to wait your turn. Otherwise you may be ejected. (not rejected)

2. Please try not to use gradient masks or fades as the transition between your piece and the previous one. It makes things look better.
