Optimus keyboard
http://www.artlebedev.com/portfolio/optimus/

Basically it's a standard keyboard (though stylish) alphanumeric, but, the buttons will change according to whatever you're doing (designing, gaming etc...) allowing for an extremely customized keyboard (imaging placing your own icons on the keys, then you could feel like a geek hereo in a sci-fi matrix like movie)

I saw it on slashdot, and even though a large part of the site looks too humorous to be real, it looks genuine.

I really will get one of those if they come out.

wow ! that is soo cool :stunned:! That could be very handful but it this thing is true, what about the price ...

edit : "It will cost less than a good mobile phone" yeah a good mobile phone... :D about 500 euros.. ?

lol that is pretty nerdy, but how much is it in usd. that looks pretty cool though how the icons change, and when you play games some things change.

it's kind of like the universal remote apple patented a few years ago. it gets commands from any wireless device within range and digitally displays the keys accordingly. i actually find the keyboard more useful. can't wait until i can actually buy one.

I'm super picky about key placement. So my question is, will I be able to pop off the Windows keys? I'm pretty sure that's a negative.

No gap between CTRL and ALT = no sale.

Other that that, it looks amazing.

mlk
July 20th, 2005, 06:31 AM
Well basically if you can remap your keyboard, you can make a 3" gap between CTRL and ALT, well at least that's what I understood.

wow that pretty cool, but its another gimmick that cost too much really.. :sigh:

Haha no, they're rather scrawny little things. But I'm so used to having this gap between the keys that it's become instinctive to feel where I'm at without having to look down. And the Windows key always screws everything up when I accidentally press it. So it's gone.

But after about 10 seconds of thought, of course I can just make the first two bottom keys CTRL and ALT respectively, and that would fix everything.

I'm sure this'll be the first super expensive model in a wave of not-so-expensive similar products. We can wait a year for HP and Logitech to release theirs, and compare their prices. These companies always find a way around patents and copyrights.

July 20th, 2005, 03:23 PM
Well, that keyboard seems pretty cool, but i wouldn't rush out to buy, I'm pretty sure there will be some compatibility issues; and just like everything else the price most definitely will drop.

The website has a picture of what the keyboard looks like with the caption, "Quake."

The problem is, I don't think Quake knows about this keyboard... so do they have software that can figure out that you're playing Quake, does the programmer have to figure it out and do it themself, or is that just a mockup? I guessing mockup.

didn't someone have a thread about this just a few days/weeks ago? it was in russian...

i think people worked out (or guessed) it would cost around $400 which, you've gotta admit, is a lot for a keyboard.

EDIT: Imagine what that would be like if you spilled something on it. It would be like the 4th of july with electricity!

It's actually going to be about $150, if I remember correctly.

And yeah, old news.

Ye well since noone else seamed to of done it, BUMP.

It seems not only has it had the buttons on the side chopped off, turned black and white, and the remaining buttons having half the screen size; the price of the product (which will be released approximately 8th of May, with preorders starting December 12th) will be a whopping $1200. slightly higher than Nokrev predicted So... who's ready to preorder :P

"It's going to cost as much as a good mobile phone"
What mobile phones are they looking at?

If a keyboard is going to cost 1200$ I expect at least color and 1 teleportation button.

noTime
December 5th, 2006, 07:01 AM
I would install one big touchscreen below the buttons (the principle must be clear to you). Such a keyboard wouldn't cost even 1000$.

Anyway, I want them to invent something for laptops. Their keyboards suck from the day Jesus was born.

Jolly_Fat_Man
December 5th, 2006, 07:31 AM
That display idea might be a good one. Even for laptops.
Might not be a smart one now, but soon OLED touchscreens will be around and you'd get a whole lot better keyboard that way.

Imagine a keyboard that redimensions it's keys based on the program you're using. It's as thin as paper to top it all off. :D

evildrummer
December 5th, 2006, 07:57 AM
Any keyboard above $300 is too much, for that you could buy loads of extra coolio stuff!

It says at the bottom "1 Year Manufacturer Warranty".

tedc
December 31st, 2006, 03:15 AM
"Manufacturer guarantee" not ThinkGeek guarantee. This means you have to find the website of the guys who made it, etc etc etc, big difference than buying something from HP and you just call HP and they send you a new one.
