Ok so I have Battlefield 2, it's a freaking sweet game, but I have a few problems with it...

Everytime a new map starts (when I connect to a server, or if it just changes whilst im playing on it) my gameplay is REALLY juttery, it's pretty much unplayable for the first 3 mins of gameplay. It used to be better, but I heard that the Catylst driver for ATI g'cards improves the performance and removes all this juttery crap, but it made it worse for me after I installed it. Why do I get such crappy laggy gameplay? I have a ATI Radeon 9800 XT Pro 256mb by the way (which should easily be able to handle the game, especially when I have all the video settings on medium).

Also, when i'm connecting to a server, it takes AGES after it has loaded when it's 'Checking Client Details' or whatever it says. It takes me a good 5 mins to get into a server (including map loading). It's really frustrating, is it normal to take so damn long to connect??

And who else thinks that the sniper rifles arn't powerfull enough? I think they should be one shot kill to the upper torso...

Well, about your connection problem, do you have a router? Firewall? Maybe even SP2 firewall can mess you up.

Yeah I have a Linsys Wireless ADSL Gateway...

It never happens on any other games, just BF2.

I can connect to a server, it just takes forever.

Ok this is really starting to piss me off now, it takes so long to connect to servers, that the map changes and it has to start all over again!

This has happend to me like 3 times today, iv just been sitting around waiting for this piece of **** to verify the client data. WHAT THE **** IS UP WITH THIS CRAP!!

Same thing happens for BF and BF vietnam. Their 3D engine must really suck (well at first). I've played Wolfenstein (wihch uses Quake engine I believe) and for a similar level of detail, maps load 3x times faster and the gameplay is much smoother.

I turn off my antivirus when playing BF (even though that's a big no-no) and it speeds up things a tad.

As for the map rotating just when you've loaded it, I know how frustrating it is.

Their engine sucks with ATi cards. My nvidia GeForce 6800 runs it perfectly, but my roommates X800 runs at about 60% of mine. Their shader architecture takes much longer to load than Nvidia's, which is why you're getting the loading problems. The jutteryness is supposedly because of the new Ati drivers too. I'd consider rolling back to the previous ones.

Open the Direct X Dialog

Start->Run-> Type: dxdiag and press enter

Go to the Sound tab

Set acceleration to Basic

Should take care of your problem.

Just found this thread.

I have the exact same card and exact same problem as butters.

I just assumed the game was a monster. (and that I only have 512MB of memory)

I will try that when I get home Bonzi

cheers

Hmmm, I have the Sapphire 9800 Pro 256Mb, so this could be a problem for me too. This could decide whether or not I get the game. Let me know how it works out.

I just remembered, isn't there a patch out already? I'm not sure if it fixes that problem but it's worth a try.

And also...I highly doubt sound 'rendering' is the cause of all this, so if that actually fixes something, EA is going downhill.

Yeah I have both patches released by EA.

I managed to fix the lag problems, I deleted the latest version of Catalyst that I had installed and re-installed the previous version - now my game runs fine.

Still takes forever to connect to a server tho.

Like I said before, it's just the new Catalyst drivers. Roll back, and wait until a fix comes out. The new ones don't really do THAT much anyway.
