Haha... I guess I should make myself useful...
That 3D thing on the website uses some obscure laggy Java applet.

I'd suggest looking into Swift3D, which is Flash-based and reasonably easy to use :)

something like that was easily done in plasma, but plasma is pretty much extinct now. swift3d would probably be the way to go. i did something like that with a 3d clock, i modeled it in plasma and brought it into director to do the controls, but you can easily do it in flash as well.

eerm if you use flash there's no way it can be textured like that if it's user-controlled (ie rotation)...

Definitely a java/director 3D sim. Check the source code.
