View Full Version : PhotoShop vs ImageReady

So, the other day I actually tried to do something creative with ImageReady... which didn't work out so well... and I thought to myself: "What is ImageReady, really?", and I thought I should ask the question here, to all you people who know much more about graphics than I do.... :)
I have used PhotoShop quite a bit, and I understand a lot of it, and can do stuff with it.... ImageReady seems completely different for some reason... for instance, I wanted to draw a box on my canvas, and had one hell of a time getting it to go in the right place, and look right... What are the reasons why someone would use ImageReady over PhotoShop? What are the pros, and cons of both applications, and what do people use them for?
I'd appreciate all the insight I can get on these matters, because I may like to know more about ImageReady.
Oh, and I think I remember someone, once telling me that ImageReady was for Vector images, and PhotoShop is not... but... I don't remember now...

Whoever said that to you was a moron.
ImageReady is a GUI to slice, prep, and create objects such as animated buttons for the web, based off of your Photoshop files, and layers or graphic files. It isn't meant for image creation.

they should just simplify the whole thing and put it all into photoshop already.

Dis-agree, Its better using another app to slice it all up, its much easier and keeps the toolbar in photoshop clean and simple.

when im in imageready i use the slice tool exclusively, and that tool also exists in photoshop, all u need to add is other palettes that are already in image ready (like the slice name palette or whatever its called) and there u go.

So, basiclly, ImageReady is to take Images from Photoshop, and be able to do more with them do get them ready for the web (or perhaps other media)... sort of like taking the slices, and PhotoShop's export tool to another level?

Yeah pretty much mate. An easy thing to remember:
Photoshop: Design/Create your graphics/interfaces etc.
ImageReady: Use those graphics/interfaces and slice them up into websites, make rollover buttons, make animated gifs.

hopefully PS inherits the way Fireworks does things with the acquisition of macromedia. FW slicing and web stuff is soooooo much better.

Personally i slice up my images in photoshop i find it easier than faffing about and loading up image ready.
Ive never seen the point in it personally, but thats just my humble opinion im sure many people would disagree.

Image Ready = Once your image is ready bring it in and do what you need to. As mentioned, that means slicing, prepping, animating, and i believe optimizing.

I've only used Imageready once, and that was to animate a GIF.
I just slice away in Photoshop.
