Kirupa and the mods decited that is was better just to get rid of it for a while. im not sure of the details that led up to the changes.

Kirupa and I, along with the Mods have decided to test out what the forum behavior would be if postcounts were eliminated. It seemed that most of the spam was generated in hopes of increasing postcount number. Hopefully this will stop the spam for a while and postcount numbers will eventually be returned to normal

Wow, I didn't even realize that it was gone.
Good Job Mods and K-Man!
I think it's great that you guys did that, it's really gonna help the spam flood goin on.

I dunno about you guys, but I'm not gonna miss it.

Hey mlk!
Thanks! The credit goes to everyone who posts here day in and day out. Regarding the post count, it's just a test to see whether the amount of members who merely post to ratchet up their post counts will stop with the removal of the post count.

This is only temporary - they should be back in a bit!

Cheers!

Acutally the random section was created because in the old forums people were posting non flash relevant information on the FLash board. The random section isnt designed for spam. it was made to discuss topics that didnt fit anywhere else on the board. it was never created to be a wargrounds of any sort.

I'm sorry i re-read a few posts and I really understood what spam meant... hehe kirupa is the one and only forum i've been on:
Spam is just adding **** that doesnt belong to a thread.... But is it also posting threads which are maybe not computer related ???? (ie: posting links or personnal life ?)

Lynx

Maybe this doesn't deal much with topic, but I was going through
members list and found that there are more than 800 unactive
members, who haven't posted any post. I don't know is this bad,
but maybe some kind of rules would solve this problem...

Yeah, we don't mind off-topic general discussions. We just want to put a stop to posts that are simply like: "I got 1,500,000 posts!", "Spam here now!!!", etc.

Stuff like post your desktop, favorite games, etc. are all good topics that can be posted all day long. For most of you, who do not post spam, you will hardly even notice the changes.

Cheers!

Just so everyone here knows... post counts mean nothing. Whether the post count is enabled or not, it still serves no purpose. It doesn't get you anything special to have more posts, so theres no point in it.

And threads created without a point are considered spam. If you want to show people something, then thats fine. But threads were being created repeatedly just to say "goodnight" or "what are you up to right now", etc, etc.

like K said, the point is to cut blatant Spam not off-topic conversations. It may be hard to see the difference but its there.

I miss the post count, it shows me who is an old-timer and who just joined today!

Actually lost, post counts are semi-relevant. If you post a helpful solution to someone, and I post one, them seeing you have 11000 posts, and me with 200 (useless ones), they'll save time by just going directly to see yours.

Hey Soul,
Yeah, we are trying to figure out a better solution - just give us a few more hours =)

Cheers!

But how do you know my 11,000 are useful? But yeah, I get what your saying.

VTS- most people like me, we come here after school just to chat and to troll the fourm.i have been here for a few months, and i admit that i have been on here for many hours at a time. I am not going to be spending as much time in random as i have i nthe past. but i will still post here, as long as my posts are not spam. :)

well maybe then God (ie Kirupa) should set up a little number that shows the position you registered in...
ok that may piss off most... Nevermind

This is kinda of a wierd idea, and I don't know how easy it would be to do it.. but maybe you could like have a status instead of a post count. Like people could rate the helpfulness of your post, and once you got to a certain point your rank increased.
I dunno.. just a thought

if a live chat could somehow be made, people could talk spam in that...

kirupa
March 22nd, 2003, 03:29 PM
Hey everyone,
Actually, Nali proposed a cool solution. Post counts will be displayed as usual, except any posts made in Random will not go toward adding up your total post count number.

So, from now on, the only way to increase your post count is to help out on the forums besides Random. I think this works out quite nicely - provides a balance from the helpful members and others.

Cheers!

Personally I think it was fine as it was. Good debaters like Phil should get recognition with a count too! :)

Well soul, this is only temporary - I'm sure in a short while we'll have this reinstated. Remember, post counts are just a number. One should post because they feel they have something to say - not so they can increase their post count :)

Cheers!
