whattup one and all, I want to know what people think are the best ways to do package design in Illustrator. I've never really done package design and it seems pretty tough figuring out how to set it up so that all the folds and ish will be correct.

I checked out a 3D plug-in that apparently " (http://www.comnet-network.co.jp/eng/product/FoldUP3D.html)quickly and easily convert a flat design into it's finished folded shape, digitally." (http://www.comnet-network.co.jp/eng/product/FoldUP3D.html) -- which seems really cool, only the plug-in costs close to 400 dollars.

Anyone know a better way? or a good formula, or tutorial for mastering the art of setting up package designs?

thanks,

Fitz

In AI.CS you can use the 3D extrude and revolve tools to make your box. Copy down things like the angles and what not... then use the rotate and revolve and put your image on the same angles... it's an easy to do it.

Oh yea you can also map an image onto a 3D surface in AI.CS

oh, no doubt -- thanks for the info simplistik.

how about as far as actually creating the template correctly, so that all the folds etc. are accurate [something like this] --> http://verseonedesign.com/images/mask_template.gif

do you know of any techniques to make setting up templates like this in different sizes and shapes less of a headache?

you just need the actual measurements of the final package once you have that its a piece of cake its not that hard, just think of it as one sheet of paper how would you cut and fold it into the shape you want it to be.

I currently use Alias Image studio and Fold Up 3d. Both of which I think you know about. You can map images to 3d shapes and extrusions, but it is rather simple. You can also take a look at Swift I have used it for packaging experiments as well.
