What kind of shooter do people like?

I've noticed some Flash shooter games use the keyboard for movement and the mouse to control the crosshair for aiming. I think this is really cool, but what about the old-school way of aiming like in Contra/Super Metroid where you can aim in 7-8 directions? Do people still dig that or is that just ancient history? What do you guys think?

I don't know any 7-8 directions shooting, but I'll be glad to see a demonstration and then I can tell you if I like it.

By 7-8 I mean shooting Up, Down, Left, Right, and all 4 diagonals. Not too many games let you shoot straight down that's why I say 7. Think Contra.

i think the new consoles should come out with some 2d/semi 3d shooters. no one makes good shooters anymore. i love shooters.

what's that one on the PS or PS2 made by square soft? that one rules. it's hard to find too.
