View Full Version : [RESULTS] "Nature's Heart 36hrs" vs SIMP
simplistik

Alright so here's the deal. I'm opening this battle up for whoever and however many want to jump in. Yes I will be competing. Here are the rules:
----------------
Theme/Title: "Nature's Heart"
Sizes: Min: 800x600 or Max: 1600x1200, one or the other
Rounds: 1, no serves, no exchange
Time: 36hrs. from the "GO" post, this gives everyone at least 24hrs to finish something.
Weapons of choice: Photoshop, Fireworks, Freehand, and Illustrator
Rules: Not to many rules a few things though:
1. No grunge, no patterns. This will be a photomanipulation w/ "photorealistic" results. So none of those little pixel diagonals, + sign patterns... none of it. Yes you can overexpose. And I will pick an easy picture to play with.
2. Limited text... personally I would rather not see any text but if you must you can only include your name or company you are representing, and/or "Nature's Heart". The only fonts allowed are Verdana, Arial, Times New Roman, or Georgia... this way everyone is on a level playing field, and everyone has those fonts.
3. The base image that is provided must be shown, clearly and must be noticable in your manipulation.
4. Lastly and most importantly... YOU CAN'T BEAT ME, I MUST WIN! Just kidding... have fun that's the last rule.
There is no deadline extention from the "START/GO" post, if you jump in and you only have 6hrs to the deadline... you only get those 6hrs.
PLEASE DON'T POST YOUR SUBMISSION UNTIL 3-4HRS PRIOR TO DEADLINE.
So to all you who wanted to battle me pony up :)
Yes I do have a theme in mind

im interested, just a question for you, how does the theme work? i mean are you gonna have a mod pic the theme or something?
so let me get this straight, u just want one piece of work? I really like the idea but i would have to know how the theme is going to work. Like is it going to be one theme that we both share? If so you aren't going to pick it are you?
I like the idea and would like to battle you, those are my only questions.
Thanks
Mike

Hmmm as for theme it will be an open ended nature theme I just wanted to give it a title that I've had set on my heart  so I figured my justification to do something outside of work is to open it up in a battle. And yes one piece of work... so bring your A game. The reason I say one is because I don't like serves and ppl basing their work off of someone else's work and then taking credit for it. I think it shows lack of creativity... for some ppl, and is an easy way out.
If I was to choose an image it would be somethin neutral I guess I'll just put my theme name up... but it would be a neutral image (I think, I dunno yet) that everyone should be able to get a good base from. But if you'd feel better about someone else choosing it... that's all fine by me, but it would have to at least fall under the title.
Oh and if it's a question of if I've started and/or my integrity... no I haven't, I don't like wasting my time on things if they aren't going anywhere. I'm silly like that...
And I did edit the rules so you can see the title :D.

alright i like it, i think im in.
you can choose the base image, i didn't mean to question your integrity, i just was curious as to who would choose it.
am i supposed to take the 'nature's HEART' literally, like should i involve a 'heart' or is it just nature?
Really looking forward to this.

LoL... well I think if we took Heart literally it might get ugly, so I was thinkin of goin the nature route... and if you feel like droppin a bloody heart in there... well... I guess you could do that too :). But I personally will probably not take the theme in a litteral sense and, but we'll have to see what I can come up w/ for the base image. As for the deadline, it's 36hrs so ppl have a little cushion... I myself hope to not spend more than 6hrs on it  once ppl respond I'll post up the image after I find it... give ppl a couple hrs to download it and then put up the "START/GO" post... from which we all have 36hrs according to that post time to get somethin groovin. Hopefully more ppl are willing to jump in... the more the merrier, some nice health compitetion.

Aight well if no one responds in about 12hrs then we'll just go and do it ourselves, and give some folks a show ;)... that'll give this post some longevity, and give it some time to be noticed. some ppl depend on most the things I negated in the rules so it may just be us :D

If you guys want to make this "anonymous" then we can make it that way. When you're done PM me a link to your art I will download it, plop it on a page and then publicize that page. Please make note of the usable canvas sizes, and have fun :)
If a mod can change the title to say 'Nature's Heart 36hrs' or somethin of that nature... thanks :)

Sorry, I'm kind of confused at what's expected... are we meant to make something that in the end looks like it could be a real photo? So using stock(etc.) add elements to this until it represents what we want?
Or are we supposed to be more creative and make something somewhat abstract/designy(I know there's no grunge)? Just a bit confused...
simplistik
June 21st, 2005, 03:53 PM
Well I did say "photorealistic" but that does by no means limit you to using only photos. However, when I think of a photomanipulation, I think of things that are made to look like they exist in the same space as the image, or at least could possibly exist. However, like I said... the subject is loose and it's open to your own interpertation... let your imagery speak for itself.

GL to everyone... I saw Reef peekin too but I think he got scared because I took his bread and butter away.I figured someone like you would make some stupid comment like that thinking I'd put grunge on a nature and photorealism theme. I just don't like the "nature" theme, it's always been too green and boring for me. Maybe it's cause I can't think of anything creative to make with those forest trees, I really don't practice ps around nature that much. Oh and simpy, it's okay though, I still have my peanut butter and jelly.

As for why your rules are discouraging here are my reasons:
Everyone has to follow someone else's theme except you.
Everyone has to follow someone else's base image except you.
Everyone has to follow a TON of guidelines from someone else, except you.
Do you see the trend here?
As for stepping out of your comfort zone, that would be you my friend. I have never seen someone have so many requirements for a PS battle.

Yea bout to sound like a **** here, and step on some toes, but... what else would you expect.
Not doing grunge and patterns is because if you look at every single battle in here... that's all you see. Where is the talent in slapping a whole bunch of premade patterns, and grunge brushes on an image.
If you want you can choose a new image if you want... no big deal to me, and as for the theme... the theme is completely open, however I just put a title to it, to give it a focus. How you interpert it is completely up to you. Photorealistic is an open interpertation as well.
The point of this battle was to do something completely different that hasn't been done here... past the mod a car, mod something off of someone elses design. This type of battle lets ppl design something uninfluence by someone elses design. To see how everyone else see's a similar concept.
As for fonts... I seriously doubt that in any way can hamper anyones creative ability. Not a single one of the rules is tilted my way what so ever. Yea you got the image after I did... but you've had almost as much time to come up with a concept as I did. How our minds determine what we do is complete different.

Wait you must be kidding right? You seriously don't know that your designs above are grunge? You can't determine a style of art, thinks like abstract, grunge, photorealistic, deco, retro... you can't figure out what the different types of style are?
@mlke
The only reason I said that is to get you motivated... you bring your buddy in Steven he disrespects us all and you toss it to the side saying he's just playing. Your style is still predetermined just like those are, your style falls under a grunge style... no matter how you look at it. It's not as intense as the ones you just showed but it's still a grunge style. And I didn't pay attention to the author, nor did I care.

LoL... well first I want to say I jsut went to your site and I hate you for using that song... cause I was gonna... but instead I'm gonna use the remix!
Anyway... personally I would catagorize Reef your style of using scratch, and grunge brushes grunge... while it's not to the extreme of the ones you showed (THANK GOD!) I believe that it still falls under the categories of dark and grunge.

anyway guys and girls back to the battle at hand!
I m quite happy with the rules in this battle and i believe they sound fair. Arent battle suppose to be a test and development of your skills with other memebers, so why would it be catered to what people are "use" to, simp wanted to create a battle that was on a level playing field which fell into the realistic / photorealistic category. Think of these rules are guidelines from a client and then develop something from your own persepctive within those guidelines it's not hard nor is it unfair.
If only more battles had a guidline description like this one, where you can read through it and know exactly what you can and cant do.
..so in conclusion stop complaining and start working! :P

I have some questions.
1. Can we use other things we have created in this battle? The tools part lists programs but it doesn't say "camera" anywhere, so is taking more pictures to supplement your modification of the image off limits?
2. Also, the same question goes for pictures we already have.
3. Also also, I'm assuming we can make stuff within the graphics editing program to be added on?
Sorry if that last one seems silly, I wouldn't ask this in any other battle thread :P

LAAAAME... this image is full of useful elements... that's just IMO though... but then again I'm pretty much done :P
But I don't think you guys are thinkin. This is just a base image to start from... you could ad a huge stone... for all I care... a bird pooopin on a dudes head... who cares... just as long it goes w/ the "theme" and the rules. Why not make this an open competition after all(ie. put yours up now), maybe that way it will clear some of the issues up that people are having. LoL... yea... right... well that type of thing is one of those common sense things. I think ppl are looking into it to much since I gave the competition more refined set of guildlines. But of course when you think of photorealism you don't want to be able to tell to a degree... you want it to look like it's natural and should/could possibly exist. 12hrs folks... start to PM me a link to where I can grab those designs... hopefully you don't wait till last minute... I've gotta b-ball game to go skewl ppl in :P
just a quickie - when we send it to you do you need a brief explanation of the thinking behind it because what one person interpretes the theme to be maybe different to another.
R
oh and rob yea you can do that... send it in a regular .txt document, or PM it to me I'll paste it in seperate from the image into the html. Which could be a good idea for everyone :)

Guess you'll have to wait to find out. I'd have to say I'm quite disappointed on the turn out though. if I made it like a 14day long battle there would've been tons of entries... limit it to about a day or less, and nothin'. some ppl just can't handle the pressure i guess :sigh: :cubs:

I thought the reason for no submissions was because the theme was weak. To me at least. I am just dead blank thinking of what an image on "natures heart" could be on.
Just show us yours, I don't think any one else cares. Just declare your uberness over them and post it damn it lol

The theme was photorealism, which is a style... and a title what's weak about it? Can you not do something that doesn't look real? The title is to point you in a direction and to give a focus... for all I care you could've taken one of those tree and put a bloody heart on it, w/ an arrow percing it. The ppl who did submit did a good job and they are all different in their interpertation... which was the point of giving a base, and letting it ride. None of the unfocused... "here take my image, do something with it, and I don't care that used about 1/100th of my image in yours... it still counts as usage."

;) these are actually quite fun. I don't normally have any down time but... work and freelance is a tad slow this wk so I figured I could waste 6hrs or so on a design that won't make me any money
