i shoot my images outside, with a white background, at around noon-time, but in the shade. Then i take my images, use the dodge tool, to brighten them up, and then using the pen tool, i seperate the item from the background. Then i save it high res (300 dpi) for later use.

what you need to do is build a light box.
its pretty much a box made out of fabric that will diffuse the light to give you even lighting with minimal shadow.
this is what is most oftenly used for product pictures.
in high price studios they use a variety of diffusion screens and light meters but if you are going for a low budget similarity search it on google.
i think the easiest way is to make a frame of a box and just skin it with a cotton like fabric that allows light to pass but not so translucent at to produce shadows.
then you just put your lighting on the outside of the box
have one end open for your camera to shoot through and you have a clean looking product that will take minimal editing if any to place on a white background.
ps. fabric should be white obviously

if you're in the UK, Maplin have something similar to this idea for £14.99 (it was a while ago anyway).
