Ok, so i searched google, but no such luck due to the ridiculous amount of "crack and serial" results :a: !
I want to create some cracks on a plane where a cylinder is coming out of it. As if the cylinder had broken through. Even better would be a way to distort part of the plane to make it look more realistic.
Does anyone have any ideas or tutorial links ???
All those crack sites get on my nerves sometimes :a:
Thanks, Mike

haha , i was about to close this thread because the title made me think it was a request for a 'crack' to a illegal copy of 3dmax.. ill change the name to something more less illegal sounding, hehe.
in regards to your question have you tried looking in the "useful tutorials and resources" sticky above? theres a huge list of 3dmax links there.

Have you tried just using a displacment and transparency map as textures.
Theirs a 3ds max artist that does great cracks if i remember corrextly by the name of pascal blanche.
All he used was texturesl, if u get the resolution up high enough and u put enough detail into it, it will blow your mind, plus be much easir and faster than actually modelling cracks in MAX.

yeah your right Machuse, most 3dartist use textures for cracks and dents, a member who was a regular here not long ago named "ironikart" has a nice little site/forum set up for 3d info, he is pretty good at 3dsmax.

check out the tutorials and if you want ask in the forum, it may even actually be already answered in there. ;)

If you have to see the model up close I would model the geometry for the crack. Or use sub-pixel displacement maps. I think max supports those. Look around www.cgtalk.com for a remedy. Havent used max in quite sometime but that is a normal rule of thumb. If the crack appears over time like an animation I would do it in post processing.

well the max xommunity has moved into MAX SCRIPTING so if you want it to animate over time that might be answer. You could also always animate the texture as well, with a combo of displacment maps. bump, and all the other feilds you should come up with what you want.
As a suggestion on a crack texture.... I would vary depending on what you where trying to do but let me grab some links otgether and ill come back once i find the texture tutorials i used to use when i was learning max.
