View Full Version : Need some logo suggestions

Hello,
my football (soccer) team need a logo, and I have tried to come up with something cool, and not the "usual" football logo. But I need some help on the design, because it's very empty in my head at the moment. So anyone that has any ideas they could share?
My teams name is Vindern SF (Vindern Sports Forening), but we also use VSF. So, whatever fits :) And we will be using the logo on the website, different clothing and the match-shirt.
And one more thing; yesterday I made a logo from a small picture of a laurel in a half-circle, and then some letters inside. But my problem is that it was made in Photoshop, and I wonder, how can I get it over to Illustrator? Because then I can resize and the like, without getting bad quality.
Thanks for any help,
fatnslow
PS: Do it matter if the logo is going to be printed on or sewed(?) on?

why don't you post what you have so people can critique and give suggestions? despite what some recent threads would have you believe, quality work usually doesn't come free.

I know quality doesn't come free, not often atleast. I'm not at my own computer now, so can't add my own work. But I don't want anyone to make it for me or anything, because I want to make it myself, I'm just out of ideas.
But, I will try some more then, I guess.

you cannot take a photoshop file to illustrator and expect it to be sizeable without loss. to get an infinitly scalable design you must create it in illustrator using vectors. AI and PS are different systems, one is raster (pixels) which means you can only go down w/o losing resolution, and illustrator is vector which uses paths or mathamatical algorithms to keep track of the shape and thus can just change the scale and not have to worry about pixelation (no pixels).
if you want to recreate it in AI, save your file in any format you want, go into AI and start a new file. goto File>Place and find your file. then you get to spend many hours learning AI and how to master the pen tool. (no real autotracing ability but maybe in CS2)

Yeah, you are like me 2 months ago when I thought photoshop could be used for logos. Hah. Hah. No scalability, so that sucks.
Anyway back to suggestions,
Do you guys have a mascot?

I found it rather difficult to resize with AI, I am entirely a NEWBIE to AI, so I was just toying with the scale tool, but not to my surprise it didn't come out to look good, at all, perhaps it is because I made it in photoshop to begin with? Or is it because of drop shadows or soemthing else? I have no idea..

the scale tool should be really simple.... if you just select everything you've got and drag the corner selection point WHILE HOLDING SHIFT (to maintain the same ratio) then it should work fine.
now if you're trying to enlarge something you've made in PS, it's going to look bad no matter what you do, because there's only a certain amount of image data and you can't add to that.
so if you want to make it fuly scaleable you'll have to redo it in illustrator vectors (you can just trace it with the pen tool, or try the auto-trace which gives mixed results.)

Thanks for replies all.
I know that Photoshop are using pixels, and Illustrator were vectors, what I meant was what you told, mainly; I wanted to know if it was possible to draw/trace the logo. Tho, it sounds hard to use the pen tool to do that :) Some more skills needed for that I guess.
Vexir: No, we don't have a mascot, since we are a friend-team. We are only like 17 people, and everyone are friends and we just made our own football team. But, our colors are white and orange and I find orange a hard color to use :(
But, I will try to use the pen tool and trace the logo, and see what I get. But if I need to, I will try and make the logo from scratch in Illustrator, anyone have some tips on how to make a logo in Illustrator? I have some tutorials from VTC, but I haven't really got much help on making logos from them.
Thanks for advices,

it really depends on experience with the program. the best thing is to experiment with the pen tool. a big part is taking the individual vertice tool and so you can edit the angles of each anchor instead of both (which changes both angles in a curv.) the individual vertice tool looks like an ^ but at a 45degree angle.
another tip... use layers to your advantage to manage your work.
when scaling up make sure to check your scale tool and ensure that scale strokes and styles is checked or you will get a very messed up design (assuming you used strokes or styles). props to simp for giving me that advice a while ago.
@tronimrich: scaling is easier here than PS. dont use the scale tool on the toolbar... select your object and drag the corner while holding shift but make sure the scale strokes and styles is checked in the scale tool.

Neat one leveler :) Do you think you could upload the illustrator file or something like that? I would very much like to see how you did it. Tools, types etc :)
=guinness= : Thanks for tip, i'll check it out.

in the new illustrator you can take a jpeg or gif and it will convert it into vector format. i can't remember the name of the procedure though b/c i just read it in a magazine yesterday.

Aha. Remember what magazine? If they have a website :)
What is the new Illustrator? CS2? I have Illustrator CS I think. Things get outdated too fast :)
But I will look into the path things, and check out whats possible and whats not.

Leveler: No I do not. Just wanted to see how you did it, but I do think it was nice. Would have asked before using, as everyone should...
I'm still trying to get my laurel picture into Illustrator, but I will put it to ice I think, because I do not have the skills needed in Illustrator, and Auto Trace didn't work very well.
Thanks,

it's acutally a beefed up version of the autotrace/ incorporated version of streamline. im not sure how accurate it is (autotrace and streamline are both tools but don't render exact results). i've seen several posts about the pain of streamline.
the new version is supposed to be more accurate though.

please excuse the double post.
i had some free time so i threw this together:
is this what you mean by a laurel? or was it a different configuration?
i did this in illustrator rather quickly and threw it on a blank jersey for comparsion.

Hey.
Sry for not replying in some time, but my router suddenly stopped working two weeks ago, so no internett connection for me :)
Anyway, =guinness=: Thats exactly the kind of laurel I wanted. Possible to attach the Illustrator file for it? Would very much like to see how you traced it, if thats what you've done, and if I may, I would like to try and use it in a logo I've thought of. Anyway, reply if you read this.
Thanks,
fatnslow
