Ahhh the almight question...
I have an AMD Barton 2500+ overclocked to a 3200+ hitting 2.1 GHZ with stock heatsink and fan. I think it's pretty good, especially considering that it's only a $70 chip 6 months ago. I also have a 1 GB of RAM so that is another thing to consider when building a machine, good RAM is great.
A lot depends on what you are going to be doing with your machine and how fast you really want it to be... if you are doing a lot of gaming I would say go for AMD, if you are doing a lot of 3d rendering and stuff like that you might want to consider Intel. Intel is a more reliable and stable chip (so they say), but it's not as fun as having an AMD:) I will be a fan of AMD for a while.
If money is no object you can go in for a 64 bit chip, and if you want to learn more about the history of chips and benchmarks you can visit www.tomshardware.com (http://www.tomshardware.com) and check out the mother of all CPU charts by clicking here (http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20041221/index.html).
Hope it helps!

AMD have a better performance per price ratio, so get a nice AMD 64. I have an AMD 64 3000+ and it works like a charm! 64 bit AMDs are not even expensive anymore.

How about in consideration of being a server, would Intel be more reliable? I'm also consider what should I go for my server, AMD or Intel, 32 ot 64 bit and what others things I should consider..

For a server get the new AMD Seperon dualcore if you can afford it.

I have an AMD 64 3000 I got it when it first came out but like mentioned before they are really fast and cheap.
I've only ever had AMD in my desktops and I've never had a problem.

go for intel, even apple does! ;)
no seriously... i always had a intel... works fine... amd would be fine, but then i would chose the 64 bit... a friend of mine had some problems with the 32 bit amd processors... it was a real mess... now he has a 64 bit and it really rocks...
i don't know what i should chose if i had to buy a new computer, i guess i would go for reliability and chose intel...

I just realize that my server 2003 is a 32-bit version. So what's the point to get a 64-bit machine. I did not do reasearch before I bought the software, just wondering if that can be upgradeable?
