View Full Version : Microsoft adds tabbed browsing to IE6

Well, fake tabs anyway...
While users wait for the beta version Internet Explorer version 7, the developer updated its MSN Search Toolbar with pseudo tabs for IE 6.
The tabs, however, are implemented by the toolbar, and not by the browser itself, unlike the tabs in Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape, and Opera. Hiding the Search Toolbar, for instance, disables tabbed browsing in IE 6.
Multiple tabs can be bundled together in what Microsoft calls -- surprise -- My Tabs, then opened with a single click. Unlike Firefox's similar feature, however, My Tabs is limited to one tab collection.
Tabs aren't new to the Toolbar: prior to its first preview in December 2004, it included tab functionality, but the feature was pulled at the last minute.
MSN Search Toolbar is part of a three-toolbar suite that also includes a search tool for Microsoft's Outlook e-mail client and another for searching local files from the desktop.
The updated software -- officially named "MSN Search Toolbar with Windows Desktop Search" -- can be downloaded and installed from the MSN Web site. It requires IE 5.01 or later.

Maxthon and Avant have had tabs in their browsers based on the IE engine for a long time :)

Perhaps it's just my computer, but I'm bombarded with 4 errors before I could even use my explorer. No thank you. I'll stick with Firefox.

Just wait for IE7 if you want IE tabbed browsing, I wouldnt download this MSN Searchbar just because it has tabbed browsing as a plug in. Im looking forward to IE7 and once iv got it, it will most likely be the end of Firefox for me on my PC.

b3n, dont you find that IE seems less.. i dont know...secure? stable? Especailly when i use IE the websites display improperly, and also ff seems to load websites quicker, and easier. My IE browser always is ready for this... "Not Responding" as goes for many other microsoft app's, not once has this happend to me on FF.
Plus ff has plugins, and tabbed browsing, even when IE7 is relased with tab browsing, it will still suck! just basically because its made by microsoft, and everything they make seem to me to be insecure and not robust. Maybe its just me freaking out :krazy:
I used to hate Mac users... but now its other way round, microsoft is just plain sucky, and that goes for its playschool themes and stupid browsers :)
Just my say on the discussion hehe

MS is kinda "Larger then Life"........everybody want to be there at the top and MS jus happened to be holding up its flag for a very long time.......the larger you grow the more important ur errors become......that jus doesnt mean that MS is load of sh*t......

Remember back to like 1997 when IE 2 or 3 was out and it couldn't hold a candle to Netscape? I didn't know anyone...that had Internet access at the time, who didn't go right away and download Netscape. Well, then with IE 4, MS started making a better browser..in my opinion and the other 99% of Internet users at the time. I predict that since FF is taking such ground, that MS will catch back up and take back the market share in the next 5 years. People will be like..."remember when FF was better than IE?"

That was a rumor because Google was reported to have hired some browser coder guy. I doubt they are because that doesn't fit in with Google's model, but I guess you never know.

It would be cool infact it would be better than google, every google does seems to be a big succsess sp? IE is pure ****, they just copy other browser ides and put it in there thats why i moved to ff, and have never thought for 1 sec to changing back

You kind of have half of my brain. Google is the best thing out there, i dont use Hotmail either because it sucks... i used Gmail! much more better. Plus a IM program by google would rule, aslong as it doesnt have Winks and nudges in im good with that.
IE do seem to be copying ideas from browsers, such as FF etc, but i guess theres not much more you can do with a browser, maybe its coming to the end of its development stages, except having to support new languages etc.

I found an article about the "GBrowser":

There's also a site with pictures from a server-stat software and it says Google 0.X in it, though I can't find it right now...
