creating tiled images for backgrounds

Does anyone have any tutorials or tips for creating a tiled image for a background? i know not all images will do this however is there a general rule that can be applied?

use photoshop's Offset filter, it will help you correct the seams a lot.
Search the forums a bit, I know we've discussed patterns quite a lot...
