I can't control the volume of my speakers (Altec Lansing). I twist the knob and the volume remains the same. At random times of the day, the volume will suddenly jump to the right volume. There are no screws on the speakers, so I can't open it. But hardware may not be the only problem. On my Windows XP, I do not see a volume control icon in the lower right corner of my screen no matter how many times I reinstall my audio driver.

try the volume control in your control panel

you dont need the volume control down the bottom in your toolbar to tell you that the sound is working.... go to your control panel and everything will be in the sounds, speech, and audio devices section.
it sounds like your volume knob may be on the fritz, you may wanna take it to a speaker shop or contact altec and tell them what is going on, cause nothing is more annoying then crappy sound!
good luck man

My problem had the same problem with his speakers the knob on his subwoofer had some dust buildup which was actually stopping it working he just took it off and blew it out with one of those air canisters
