Hey everyone,
This is the forum where you can submit and view entries for the FXpression 05 Contest. If you have any questions, feel free to post here and I'll try answer them.
In a Nutshell
Basically, you have to create some cool special effects that will, eventually, replace the random circle and dot animations you see throughout the site. In order to help you to focus on creating the effect as opposed to worrying about unnecessary details with the layout, we have provided you with an FLA that you can simply edit and upload to this forum once finished: http://www.kirupa.com/lab/contest.zip (http://www.kirupa.com/lab/contest.zip).
Uploading
When you are uploading a file, please create a New thread for each entry you upload and use a creative title. Both the new thread and a creative title would ensure that your entry isn't accidentally overlooked when I and the judges comb through to find the best entries =)
More information can be found here: http://www.kirupa.com/lab/fxpression.htm (http://www.kirupa.com/lab/fxpression.htm)
Make sure to attach both your SWF and FLA to the forum. Please don't host them on your own site or domain, because attaching them here ensures that your animations stay viewable all the time.
Good luck and have fun!
Cheers!

Do you have to state that you want to enter? if so, lindquist and i are teaming up, so everyone else might as well not even bother because we're going to win. No questions about it. :P

hahaha, don't claim victory yet... you never know what's inside the tuna until you open it...

No - there are no signups or whatever :) Just post and submit your entry. If both of you guys are teaming up, and your entry is one of the winners, I can only provide one prize for the both of you since the contest isn't really designed for team-based entries.
You guys can duel it for the prize if you both your entries end up winning :P

oh, and we're not supposed to do any circle related ones, right? because we've got enough of those?

You can submit as many as you want EG, and you can do circle ones also. I just wanted to emphasize that people can do other things besides circles. In other words, just because I'm obsessed with them doesn't mean that all entries have to involve circles :P

But it might mean that when Kirupa is judging he'll be biased towards the circular ones. ;)
Kidding!

I'd try, and probably win, if it weren't for these two problems:
1. I have no ideas for what to do.
2. I can't make effects for my life.
Other than that, I'm in pretty good shape :P.

Hey not sure if anyone else noticed but your_effect.fla wasn't in the zip file. Is it not supposed to be in there?
I just saw the your_effect.swf so I figure there is a .FLA to go with it...
anyways good luck to all who enter. :beam:

Ah - thanks limitlis! I have added that file into the most recent version of the zip file :)

Is interactivity allowed or should we only focus on visuals?

I think visuals only... wouldnt want to make it a game, people'd never make it past the first page :P
Btw, your footer is impossible.

Primarily visuals, but if you really really really want to add some interactivity, PM me first with your idea ;)

Kirupa, I think you should make a sticky on random so that people would be interested, if you're not going to keep up that notice thing.
First judge, next mod! Huahahahahacaughuhughugfsnnnnhehgheschtsnhahhu! (Caugh - reanact with emphisis)

It's already made an announcement :)
Kirupa, the guideline says the thing cannot exceed 10k max. But the sample in your zip including all the files to be loaded will exceed 10k (all of them together). That's ok right? As long as less than 10k of files are loaded each time.

lol that footer was annoying the **** out of me, so i tweaked my keyboard setting and can actually play now (up the repeat rate of my keystrokes and shortened the delay). The only thing is now that i can plan u just put the ball in the middle and nothing happens lol

mtsoul - yeah, that's fine. Unlike footers, only one instance of an animation is loaded per page ever, so a visitor won't be loading more than, at most, 10k + extra stuff. I don't have pages where more than any one of the those special effect thingies are present.

Nah you just have to tap left really quickly... Holding it down is too slow.

Wow! It is much harder than I thought just getting the circles going in different directions. And I was wondering why vectors in math was important. I'm learning that next year, so its gonna be hard now. I'm just going to try to be creative, my math will certainly be beaten out by Kode and Linquist and everybody else there who has posted all these nice effects! Can someone teach me vectors? Or how I could make the path of a ball randomly swirve? Thanks guys...

When the judges are voting, will they look at our designs through the shell (random text and border) or will they look at them as is?
If it's through the shell, then designs should be light and not contend with the text. But if it's as is, could we keep our designs on the more contrasting side so that the judges consider the effect more than the aesthetics? Afterwards, Kirupa may tell the winners to lighten their designs for the final version.
What do you think?

ok well is their a desired FPS for these? Also is the 10K, referring to mem used or the file size?
