View Full Version : Photography Battle III

Last year we had some amazing entries in the two photography battles. It's time for another, so here are the rules:
Rules -- UPDATED
Theme: "Once Was Beautiful"
Picture Type: Digital, Scanned, or Photo CD (or pretty much anything else you can think of) -- Black and White or Color
Editing: Only minor adjustments may be made using photo editing software. Levels, Brightness/Contrast, and cropping are allowed. All other edits are not
Participants: Anyone who submits before the deadline (One photo per member)
Entry Deadline: 11:59 PM CST, Monday, June 20, 2005.
We need to decide a theme, and after that is determined, an official submission thread will be created. All chat about the battle should go here and not in the official thread once it is created. The deadline will be approximately 3 weeks after a theme is decided upon and the official thread is created in order to give people time to go out and take their pictures and for the analogers to get their film developed. Once the deadline has passed, we will have a vote and the winner will be determined.
So what are your guys' ideas for the theme? The first battle was reflections, the second was black and white. Other ideas have been nature, people, contrast, color, force, beauty, industry, violence, sky, water, sports, sunrise/sunset, insects, new perspectives, letters/numbers, wildlife, flowers. Come up with some more or pick your favorite.
Edit: So that this doesn't come up later, I forgot to say that the picture you submit needs to be taken specifically for this battle, the point is to get you out and taking pictures (and to have some fun and friendly competition) :D
Submission Thread Here:

People sounds like an alright theme, although I would prefer a more abstract topic. I'm in for this battle!

Yeah, if it were up to me I'd vote against people as well (although that might just be the antisocial side of me talking).

People sounds like a great idea. I think it would open peoples minds a little and we could get some great entries with it.

doesn't matter to me, whatever you want to do. I think you should just decide on a theme and go for it. the longer we talk about it and ask for more input, the longer it's gonna draw out to get started. ;)

Great idea Ethan! I really like the "Once was Beautiful" idea, it allows freedom, yet the entries will still be thematic. Let's go with that. I'll start a thread for submissions, this one should remain for chat about the battle. People are still encouraged and welcome to join, this will not be a closed battle.
So come on people, get your "Once was Beautiful" pictures taken, developed, and posted :thumb:
Good luck everyone!

And prettyboy, about your statement that went with your submission about the border, I'd consider it fine, because you didn't edit the picture, only a border :D

generally, borders are fine in a photo contest. It's not a change to the image itself, it's a presentation. I would be shocked it a border or matting was not allowed.
i saw a couple ideas earlier today but couldn't shoot it. I'll make some time tomorrow and see if my idea pans out.

Borders are fine, generally when you print a picture you get it matted anyway. Basically the rules are just there to prevent things you wouldn't be able to do in a dark room (and some of the tricky stuff that you could do in a darkroom but generally wouldn't ;)).
Nice submission btw.

brossie you have some pretty sweet photos in your blog. i would like to hear your thought on how your cloud pic though to you shows something that was once beautiful....
... a clear beautiful sky now covered in clouds?
... a beautiful ocean that evaporated, condensated and will soon percipitate?
...

First of all thanks on comment on photoblog prettyboy!
About my picture: I thought it was quite a difficult theme and at first I didn't find any good picture.
But, these clouds and the beautiful sky stand for clean air. But, the clean air has disappeared that's why many countries from all over the world signed a contract (except USA:upset: ) in the Japanese town Kyoto in which they declare to minimize the CO2 emission and the emission of other exhausting fumes.
Quite a lot for some clouds, isn't it.
Hope you understand it better this way, bros
