iPod Skin Battle

General Overview:

This is also my first battle iv started on Kirupa Forums, I started it on the Lab.Rats Forums and it has been great so far. Also if your wondering why I chose to skin an iPod for the battle theres no reasons, its just what popped in my head and was easy to find a nice image for. Now onto the battle info:


iPod Skin Battle Rules/Objective:

- Objective: Skin an iPod with a design of your choice (Not MOD an iPod)

- Must use the iPod image supplied in this thread. Do not re-size image.

- One entry per person.

- Entries are to be posted in this thread by 20th June 2005

- I and some others will then review the entries.

- The best entries will be chosen for the polls after the deadline.

- Please Dont spam this thread, And Enjoy!!

The skin is ok, just the lining is a little uneven, and in the middle I can see a little white around the touch pad. Try using the circular marquee tool.

hey zelda, that aint crap just needs a little bit of work, as grinch above me said, try getting out your marquee tools and cutting out the shapes instead of using the eraser, that will give you the crisp lines you will want for the "pad" and the "screen" and try and get your image all the way to the edge of the ipod. then it will look super cool!!

i really dont know how to make it look realistic, if you havent noticed (which if you really didnt then i would be laughing my head off) i am not a well trained PS person.

Well, I used the pen tool and the circle shape tools (its a lot easier that way because you can drag the circle out from the center.. and you can find the center easily by using guides :) ) and they worked pretty good for me...

But that might be a little advanceced for someone new to photoshop.

Good time to learn though :thumb:

Skinning the wheel is too easy, all you have to do is plop the graphic down and set the blending accordingly. Leaving the wheel stock makes it harder because you gotta get the elliptical out.

it's a "skin" if you were to wrap the thing celophane with your design you wouldn't see the wheel or the screen... I say play with the screen, the button but not the wheel. besides, you would rub it off in one day and then it would reaaly look like arse.

Well the only different skin apple have made, the U2 one, had a red scrollwheel... so surely we should use their one as a guideline, and in that case be allowed to skin the wheel as well?

Yeah well the design in itself is fairly simple, but I've gotta make it stand out somehow. If I had a real iPod skin I would want it that simple as well.

You can change your background if they want too... mine took like 3 seconds to make. People know we're voting for skins, not backgrounds.

Yes, and normally, iPods aren't always on white backgrounds. Last time I checked, my jean pockets were blue :)

I should also add, that the backgrounds are chosen based on what best suits the iPod. Normally Apple displays their iPods on white backgrounds because that's what they look best on, but when they came out with the U2 iPod(which BTW has a modded clickwheel) they have pictures of it on a black background(http://images.apple.com/ipod/u2/gallery/images/u2front20041026.jpg) because that's what it looks best with.

You can't expect people to make tons of unique skins and then not make backgrounds that show them in their best light. A white background wouldn't go with my skin design nearly as well.

In ads for iPods they would. The marketing people would choose clothes and backgrounds that matched/jived with the product. That's just how it works.

Just did a rough sketch on paper, and then drew it up in vector, no secret really... and to be honest it isnt perfect at all, but turned out ok.

I guess drawing it at a larger scale then shrinking helped with some of the fine tuning.

In my opinion the selection tool are the first thing you should get really comfortable with. Once you have those under control youre free to alter an part of the image in any way you want to. Then its down to learning layers and blending modes. :book:
