Try either Safari or Camino.. and you probably don't need a firewall, I don't think Macs have open ports by default :)

Safari or Firefox. I use Safari most of the time.

safari is the best.

I personally don't like Firefox one bit, but I can't say I've ever used it. When I tried to download after reading post after post of these kirupa-kooks saying "Go Firefox !" I figured i might as well try it out. But when I did, it did not finish downloading for some reason. Then since it was "still in use by IE, I could not delete it at all! I finally went into Terminal and got rid of it and tried again. The second time it worked, but ended up putting a million preference files into my harddrive, thus making all the other broswers crash when opened. So i said screw Internet Explorer and Firefox, and went to Safari. I love Safari, gotta love those tabs.

Safari has its limitations. For example, it's terrible when it comes to Java. Most java games and applications i've come across display incorrectly or run slowly, or just plain dont work. On the other hand, Firefox does java really well, but there are HUGE issues when it comes to flash content, such as intense lagging, and bugs and what not.

I've had many problems with my small amount of time with Safari...

Camino isn't updated as much as Firefox, so I'd probably use Firefox more, though I'd still have Camino installed.

As much as im not a Mac person, I use them at my Uni (unfortuantly!) anyway the browser on them is either Safari or IE. I love IE on a PC but Macs NO! it doesnt work! Safri is great, works all the time, no probs from me, a fine browser, :D:D

Hm. is there a IE rendering engine browser for Mac? How else would a developer w/ a mac test his/her pages for IE? O.o

Nah, definately safari has issues with Java... firefox doesnt. I experiance this wierd "freeze" on some site with intensive flash animations, the content freezes, and doesnt move unless i click and hold my mouse... and then the entire window freezes and i cant close it... Any one else experiance this with os x 10.3.9 and firefox?

Hi thanks for the reply everybody,

I just downloaden them all for testing purpose anyway.... I like safari sofar, but also have encountered some lagging issues with flash content, which I would think would not be a problem with a 1.5 gig powerbook. But noticed that the other browsers didn't have these isseus....

thanks for the advice,
Dutchy

I'm suprised no one has mentioned this yet. Opera.
It really does rule, it's the fastest browser and has the best css support (http://www.howtocreate.co.uk/operaStuff/fanboyRants.html#morecss). Not to mention that it's fully customizable and has loads of advanced features.

flash lagging is a macromedia problem, not a mac/apple problem. Mac's flash plugin seems to play at the incorrect framerate when downloaded from the web. locally, if you ran the swf, it would fly. It's baffling and annoying, but I've learned to deal with it.

and i find it funny that all you people are bashing safari and praising FF, when safari was built on the same thing as mozilla. it's pretty much the same browser, just has the apple look at feel to it.

personally, i highly recommend safari on a mac -- FF on pc.

We usually switch between Safari and Camino. We do most of our browsing in Camino though. I've heard that the rendering engine was updated for Safari in OS 10.3.9 and that there are big in improvements (e.g. Safari 2.0) in Tiger. Anyone weigh in on that?

Safari is great. I wouldnt go with Firefox, it just doesnt run as well as it does on a PC, which is a shame as its what Id like to use on my mac.

Actually, Safari is based on the KHTML rendering engine (http://dot.kde.org/1041971213/) used by Konqueror, which is a fairly obscure (in the grand scheme of webdesign) browser =). Apparently, Apple chose KHTML because it was lighter than Mozilla, or some such thing..

I would have sworn that Safari came from Mozilla roots as well....
