is anyone else bothered by the feature in Windows XP that automatically resizes images if they are to big for your browser window?

i think it sucks...and i don't want microsoft telling me how to surf the internet..its already bad enough that google does that...

if anyone knows a way to turn that off let me know!

You can turn that off. I hate that feature and I turned it off the day I got it.

Tool/Internet Options/Advanced Tab/

In there will be a subsection called "Multimedia"

Uncheck the option in there that says...

"Enable Automatic Image Resizing"

For me it is the second checkbox down from the "Multimedia" title.

it's hard to imagine that no one has really pushed another operating system to compete with microsoft..

.. yes, I know what you're going to say.. compatibility issues, programs are all written for windows, no open source, bundling... etc.

but why wouldnt a major computer maker make their own OS or partner with linux, to compete with microsoft. They dont HAVE to stop bundling windows.. just offer another OS.

Yes, I know what you're going to say.. some have DONE that... but no one has really PUSHED it with 110 percent effort.

there's nothing to lose (except your market share.. hehe) but imagine the millions that could be made!

LoungeActx, if you hate Explorer, there`s always an alternative browser. For example, I`m using Opera 7.1 ( www.opera.com ).

reverendflash
March 15th, 2003, 02:05 PM
or avantbrowser.com

it's Opera with a new name, and tabbed browsing!

runs on IE's engine...

March 15th, 2003, 02:59 PM
Actually.. Comparing Xp with the other browsers.. XP allows you to control so many more things. It's a helluva alot better than the other versions...

Now.. It's not XP's fault with the Image Resizing as Beta pointed out. It's IE's fault... And it was a simple click to turn it off.... Soo... For the people out there who likes to view there images on one screen can.. And for those that don't (like you and me).. We can too..

It's called compatibility.. I really love how you can have a photoslider in your folders... Or view them as mini thumbnails... It's great.. And The error handling scripts done for XP are brilliant.. I have YET to see my XP lock up.. That's impressive to me..

*shrugs*.. Maybe I'm just a Microsoft Whore but hey.. I think they make **** good software. Computers don't ship out other software to go along with their computer because it would probably confuse too many people.. And the sheer reason Windows succeeds is because it's easy for someone to plop down in their new computer and screw around.

Why is everyone so quick to start an OS opinion war?

Some people like Macs, some people like Linux, some people like Windows. It will always be that way, no point in starting an argument over it.

I personally love windows XP, but I will admit that on some systems I have noticed it runs like crap. On mine it doesn't.

I also love the OSX for Macs.... it is incredible.

As for Browsers... I love NS7 and I love IE.

I am partial to pretty much anything, if it works, I am for it ;)

Oh yeah... and as Marz said..

It's great.. And The error handling scripts done for XP are brilliant.. I have YET to see my XP lock up.. That's impressive to me..

Same here 100%. I have had no problems due to the OS itself since I have gotten XP. But my friend installed XP and it crashed all the time. It is weird, but it is going to be like that with ANY software or OS, no matter what platform.

Yeah man.. I was just trying to give in a little juice to Xp.. To make people see it's not as bad as they think...

Yeah.. I'll agree wiht you though..

Pay me to say what? My opinion?

I don't favor one thing over another enough to trash another type of software.

I prefer certain things, but that does not mean I am not flexible in using other software.

Yeah.. I agree... There is no reason for me to "kiss" anyone's ***.. As a Microsoft User.. And former Linux and everything else user.. I just chose from which I liked.. I liked Linux over Windows 98.. But when I seen how nice XP was.. I said screw linux..

My personal opinions.. Doesn't mean I'm up Microsoft's *** because of that :-p

ok..here it is in a nutshell...

out of all the Microsoft OS's I've used...and i've used pretty much every single one since 3.1...

I like Windows XP...I rarely have any problems with it.

It has some cool features that I like, but as with everything else in life there are things I don't like. The reason I posted this thread was to see if I could turn the option I hated off. Which LostinBeta helped me with. Thanks man! :beam:

I swear I've looked at those 'Advanced' options a million times missing that option every single time.

The reason I put up with IE is that is what 98% of the internet population browses on. It won't be much of an issue if everyone just followed the W3C web standards. But since Microsoft is too busy taking over the world, and Netscape is busy trying to take over their part of the internet, and Mozilla, and Opera are still way below standrards with CSS, I'm planning on browsing the internet with IE. :esmirk:

I agree lost...

everyone take a chill pill. Lately there have been people willing to argue about anything, and it rarely has anything to do with the topic of the thread...

Whether it is a browser, an ISP, an OS, or even which program to use... Someone will always have a different opinion, and like different things about "their" programs...

Let's leave this kind of bickering to the chat rooms, and other forums...

Please?

No problem man.

And 98% uses IE??? Nah, I doubt that one ;)

As of AOL 8.0 all AOL users are browsing with Netscape. Most Mac users still browser on mozilla/netscape browsers because the Mac IE is an early version and sometimes is unstable or unsupportive of things that Netscape on Mac or IE/NS on Windows is supportive of. In essence, the IE on Macs can be buggy. Then you have those users that just plain prefer NS over IE to begin with. With NS7 and the new Mozilla though, they are MUCH better than they were before.

Although IE is actually more popular, I would say it is best to think about it as a 50/50 situation between them two as dominating browsers, they each have ups and downs.

But then there are browsers like Opera and such.... oye, I won't get started on them, they are just another way to keep us coders having to code more stuff for it to work cross browser

emm, Opera 6.0.5 had some bugs and I used to have to run IE, but Opera 7.1 is really good, and 98% percent of sites optimized for IE are working as well on Opera.

lostinbeta
March 16th, 2003, 02:47 PM
I believe Opera runs off of a similar engine as IE, but still some things are different coding wise, I have no beef with Opera really, I haven't tried the new version, its just with all these browsers, coding for cross browser compatibility can drive a person insane...lol.

LoungeActx
March 16th, 2003, 03:29 PM
i was just using 98%, as a high percentage of internet browsing...

March 16th, 2003, 03:47 PM
I stay with my opinion, Mozilla roxx, and it is not so much work anymore to optimize a site for NS/Mo . Especially not, when you think of it, when you are starting...

I see I'm the only one who is a true Windows 2000 Professional dude. ;) I hate XP. It's on my family computer, which is the one I have to use, but I have win2k on the Intranet server.

win2k is better than winME, but both of those OS's almost destroyed my comp they crashed so much.

Everyone I know with winME has a problem with winME, but only a few select people I know with win2k have problems with that, so I guess I was just one of the bad cases.

reverendflash

W2k is a very stable OS... both my g/f & I use it, and rarely crashes.

Hey Philbert, what you said about win2k is what I experience with winXP, win2k always crashed on me.

It all depends on your system. Some just aren't fit to run certain OSes I guess :-\

Who knows, maybe win98 is the most stable for someone else :-\

My friend still uses win95 because no other windows works better on her comp. I find that oddly amazing, but its true.

reverendflash
March 16th, 2003, 04:34 PM
you are right lost... everyones' hardware runs better in different configs...

I personally have had no probs with W2k, but I know very few people with ME that can say the same... That is the only real "quirky" OS that I have seen myself...

Rev http://www.aulman.com/rev.gif

lostinbeta
March 16th, 2003, 04:36 PM
Yeah, I can honestly say I think winME is THE worst OS out there. I honestly have yet to know someone that runs that OS and hasn't had problems left and right.

My brother had me over his house every other week because his computer crashed and got all screwed up and I would have to fix the problem and on many occasions that involved completely reformatting and reinstalling everything.

Same thing with a few of my friends. ME was a mistake.

LoungeActx
March 16th, 2003, 04:37 PM
well first off...

Win2K is very stable..my freshman year at school i had to dual boot Win ME and Win2k. The reason for that was because Win ME let me run programs like games, and Win2K let me do my work and hook up into all the school servers. Win ME happens to be the poorest operating system ever designed. Win2K i have never ever ever had a problem with it. It was great.

The U. of Hartford gave a copy of Win. XP Pro, and I have to say that it has exceeded most of my expectations.

Whether you use Win2K or XP Pro they are both decent operating systems.

..in my eyes...and no this isn't to start an arguement. There are lots of things that can screw up an OS. It all depends on the work that you will be doing on your computer.
