configuring my pc

hey all,

I bought a new PC with windows OS. The thing is I have to connect this system with the other PCs using LAN network.
So, could anybody teach me step by step so that I can configure my system and make it work.

Basically, just get a router, hub, or switch and plug this into your cable/dsl box. That gets you into the WAN. Then plug all your computers into this box, and now you're wan'ed and lan'ed.

shouldn't i configure anything in my system? Is it enough if I just plug the cable into the hub? what is all about ip address then? isn't it necessary in this case? Pls guide me all these. I'm very new to this. But I'm eager to learn.........:chinaman:
