View Full Version : Odd Client Request

Well, probably not really odd, but I've never had a client cross out the part of our agreement that states I can add their website to my portfolio...

I can't understand why a client would not want me to add them to my portfolio. We have already agreed that I couldn't put a link in their footer (as a design credit) but now, after giving them a MAJOR discount for the site so I can build my portfolio, I am not allowed to... I almost understand, since this is for a church... but what is the harm really?

Anyone ever have this experience with a client crossing out parts of your agreement? For a huge website at $550 you'd think they would be happy.

Meh. You shouldn't have mentioned anything about the portfolio in the first place... :sigh:
I hate stupid clients who want everything for nothing EVEN WHEN they know that they're getting a really good price.

Well, here is the deal, if they crossed out "I can add your website to my porfolio", that does not have the same legal meaning that "I CANNOT add your website to my portfolio". All that is there now is no legal definition of what you can and cannot add to your portfolio. I wouldn't sweat it, and put it right in your portfolio.

I don't think you can cross out lines in contracts. If it's crossed out, and if they signed it, the crossed out line is binding

Yeah, you can't "cross out things" in a contract...or they could just cross out the part where it says they had to pay you... if they signed it already, that's all you need.

You would have to "agree" to the "cross-out" as well - just be clear headed about it.

:) It's your creative work...they own it after completion usually, but that doesn't mean you can't say "hey i did that!"

mmmyeah... You'd have to actually *modify* the contract (ie. print a new, modified version of it), not just cross out. Otherwise, much fun could be had with phone company contracts and suchlike

That's pretty lame IMO

ummm...why don't you just ask why they crossed those lines out?

what's stopping you from putting it in your portfolio anyway?

thats absolutely retarded. clients are so dumb sometimes. Especially when they want a full cms for 300 bucks or something crazy like that. I guess we all just have to deal with it. Makes some funny stories sometimes though:lol:

In the future do not mention irrelevant things such as being able to put it into your portfolio. There is no need for such a clause. It IS YOUR CREATIVE PROPERTY, they cant prevent you from saying to others hey look at this site, I made it.

I mean think about it... a builder builds a house for someone, then when a new client comes along he's not allowed to say hey go look at 52 Main St. thats one of the recent homes I've built.... :sigh:

The client has every right to deny you putting a visible link on their page, but cannot prevent you from putting a link in your portfolio.

If I were in your shoes I'd just smile, say whatever needs to be said for you to get paid, then put the link up on your site anyway. In the future, dont mention stuff like that in any contracts. :thumb:

Peace

exactly what i'd do. you not having the freedom to put it in your portfolio would require you to sign a non-disclosure agreement (and receive some consideration for doing so).

i'd be a bit pissed at this to be honest

its your design, your doing the hard work, in fact it sounds like you've cut your normal price to do this site for these guys...nah I'd be a bit pissed and raise an issue

if you feel really strongly about it, fight for it...or maybe being sneaky is the way to go

I think being able to put their (or your) website in your portfolio should have been something said between you and the client as well as the link on the website. Its not really something you should include in a contract. If you don't show people you created this website in your portfolio, you might not get more jobs that your supposed to. Make sure that you outline how the contract will work. Its a contract, whats good if its "crossed"? Some clients are smart (know what they want, need) and dumb ("just do me this and that).

Luckily, I was reading this yesterday night, you should take a look:
