I used mac at school for 3 years in my program.

I would never ever go back to them. I hated the macs. Sure they looked nice and some nice features but you just cannot beat a PC - in my eyes anyway.

Again - this is just my opinion - I do not want to start a flame war *runs for extinguisher*

Switched last August here! It was a birthday present to myself... a new iMac. And just as you have experienced Mariofan... the 17" widescreen iMac came out mere days after my purchase. *DOH!*

Oh well, I'm still totally enamored with my iMac. I named it "The Brave Little Toaster."

Mariofan: I knew there was something cool about you! And a powerbook... man am I jealous. The 17" PB is cool, but I think the 15" is more convenient for people on the go.

I am only 13, and can't afford a Mac... ever! :)

nah, I will either save up for one, or my parents will get me one when I go to college! Ohhh geez! Long time to wait. (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=Cheap+Time+Machines)

ahh! I found one on E-BAY! Used time machine, only $200! YAY!

(click click click, type type type, "Mom, can I see your credit card?", 3 days later, ahh ha! UPS man! 1 day after UPS man arrives, yep I got it, my very own Mac :) )

do you not know "our" interface options? They eclipse the mac 10-fold.

each consecutive version of OSX is one which would make you hate to go back. Its still not perfect by any means, but Jaguar is nice and its moving along nicely and Im excited about the future of the OS. I still personally dislike the interfacing, So I stick to the PCs for the most part, but thats just me.

I think you're wrong Sinocular. I'm not going to go into details here.. I just don't have the time to argue over the finer points of mac verse windows.. but there are benefits to the mac interface that windows cannot touch. I'll admit that there are things about windows that mac can't touch as well.. but 10 fold? I don't think so. maybe 4 fold in some areas.. but that's all I'll give ya. :P

I used a mac for awhile. It's just another PC, I don't get all the fuss about it.

Once you work yourself into the small differences, of course it'll seem better. (It was made with like, three year olds in mind.)

Personally, when I used a mac, I wouldn't give it any points over a regular windows box. There's nothing special. Win and OS both have all their features each can brag about. Whoop dee doo. The only thing I can tell there is different between them is that the mac processors obviously suck. (Oh, and the fact that Mac's cost more than regular PC's for the same hardware. That might be a factor.)

I don't understand why maccers brag about their dual processors.

"Yeah dude, I got a dual processor G4."
"Oh really? Isn't that just two processors trying to pull off what my one is in my PC?"

Sorry, but IMO, once you get used to the differences, there are no differences. They're just computers.

uh... yeah.

For every one mac user out there, there's like, what... 100 win users?

I'm just taking a wild guess, but it's probably an even larger gap.

RelandR

...And for every RollsRoyce driver... there's probably a hundred or much more chevy drivers - just a wild guess =)

...point is - the likes of Bill Gates, microsoft, IBM, etc., etc using the Mac is a fairly heftier validation for them as machines/OS's than sheer numbers of users.
...I'm not bashing wintell boxes - I'm using one now - but I see that MACs have an outstanding reputation amongst real thinkers, ...beyond that of the crowd that put stickers of that *kid* peeing on the other guys logo on their rear windows.

My preferred box is a MAC ... but your right in one area - under the hood, it's all just 1's and 0's...

actually the G4 does have something that is very similar to a hood. :) You'd have to own one to know I suppose.

I find my Window's box does everything I need it to do, and I have less problems finding software for the machine. My fiance finds the Mac works best for her. In the end I'm under the impression that both have pros and cons... it really is just a matter of who needs what.

I'm using a Win laptop right now, and I love it. It runs fast, nice graphics (well, not 9700 good, but they're still pretty good), and it was cheaper than the powerbook mac thing. Mine's only got the 15" monitor, but I'm ok with that. The thing I never liked about Mac's was (i haven't even looked at one in 8 years so if its changed, just tell me, don't flame me :)) that the mouse was all wierd, they didn't have any good games, they weren't as fast as pc's, and they cost more.

Xero
March 14th, 2003, 01:59 AM
i really think both of them are the same kind of thing. They both run programs (in macs case not as much) but in the end they are pretty much the same. I like to build pc's for very cheap and use my old cooling system. I have not attempted to build mac yet but i can rarely find the parts for it... I think the OSX desktop looks pretty cool but you can actually replicate that with windows but dling windows blinds demo and dling the osx desktop on wincustomise.com

on a different note...

LOL!

that is why I never ended up putting a case on "Frankenstein" (yes, I know he was the Dr... not the monster...), at the time of building, I knew I was going to add stuff... now it is so full, I need a fan blowing on it constantly so it doesn't overheat in the summertime...

If I had the $$$, I would own a 23" monitor and G4... I really like the monitor, and I do like some of the Mac thangs, but money makes me a Windows guy... albeit a W2k guy.. still a Windows guy...

but that could change real easily... anybody want to be a sponsor of a 40-ish web designer who cooks real well, and is neat around the house?

Yes, that was a gross over exaggeration ;) personally I think (on average) its like 2 fold by DEFAULT (options to what we can do with that inteface is 10 fold or more). This all being for interface, mind you.

... all arguments youve heard before nothing new...

Im perfectly comfortable using a windows machine without a mouse. I wouldnt dare try that on a mac. OSX has definitely improved in that area though (woohoo!). I also dislike mac window focusing and the title bar of each application being in the same spot. On a PC, if visible, I can click once to access any titlebar menu of any application. Thats a lot of extra clicking and a lot of extra mouse movement across the screen (always having to go back to the top of the screen) to get things done. (oh yeah and hte default single button mouse).

... all arguments youve heard before nothing new...

Basically, that, and application support are pretty much the primary things keeping me from haing a mac at home now. I have a feeling Ill be using the next PC I buy (pre-longhorn) for a very long time. Yes, MS is evil. I just may go mac sooner or later.

thats it! i start a friendly mac thread and all you playa haters start to dis my machine!

why are you mad? could it be :

1.i can run illustrator, photoshop, indesign and flash all at the same time without that dreaded fear that the precious work i have onscreen will dissapear..

2.Colours on screen come out the same on paper (everything came out too light when i was on a pc)

3.type handling is the best on mac

4.im not lied to about the true processor speed of my machine, or the amount of bytes in a megabite......

5.I sit at my desk, chair etc and dont have to look at a big grey box which i can assure you stumps your creativity...

6.my 20gb ipod works perfect every single time

7.when i made the switch, i plugging in my fuji camera and i didnt even need to install it - same with the ipod and my intellimouse (which allows a right click for contextual menus)

8.i dont have to restart my computer 20 times a day

9.The os is just really sexy - and works so well that after only 10 minutes any windows user will switch

10.my powerbook is made from titanium, titanium ******mit - oh, lets carry around a big black block of plastic (toilet seat)

11.anyone who dissagrees see me in the school playground at 3.05 - we can settle our differances through a pokemon card battle

Mariofan - will you be my best friend?

I'm gone for one night - that was enough time for people to jump in here and give their two cents about a machine they don't even have!

And now a confession... I drive a Chevy Metro. My car is so cheap and total cost of ownership is really inexpensive too. I can get a whole new set of tires for just a few bucks over a hundred. Parts, labor, everything is cheap for this car. Not only that, I get about 40 miles/gallon.

I simply can't understand why anyone would buy a BMW. Who needs power doors and windows... I like rolling up my windows manually. Who needs power steering? Not only that, but a BMW costs 5-10 times more than my car. When I see a group of BMW drivers gathering 'round on the street, I butt right in and tell them their car sucks. They only get it because it looks nice and has leather seats. Who needs that?

*Now back to the regularly scheduled program.*

Correct me if I'm wrong, but where in here did any of us Mac users
try to force any of you guys to use a Mac? I thought we were here just to call out Mac users and share our positive experiences. I can't speak for everyone but I never try to get anyone to switch. In fact, I don't even like to talk about my computer since in my short time being a Mac user I've learned that this opens up a can of worms. Even a slight mention of a software that is Mac only can send people into a rage of godly proportions about MY computer. Yes, we know you think it sucks and you've made up your mind that PCs are the best. Move along.

On a happy note: I'm glad to see I'm not the only Mac user on this forum.

Oh I've heard of that book and I am a newb with the Mac. I thumbed through it but I don't think I'll buy it anytime soon. I dont' think it's really necessary to function, at least for the kind of things that I do. But I might be purchasing a unix book soon. That's one of the best parts about OSX afterall.
