gah!

I can't get my Mac mail to find the SMTP server for gmail! :scream:

the pop server works fine though, I can retrieve mails fine.. just not send them! :(

I tried the gmail help section on configuring mac mail.. it just says to input smtp.gmail.com

DOESN'T WORK!

1. Open up Mail.app and press Command+Comma to invoke the Preferences window.
2. Switch to the "Accounts" pane and press the + button in the lower-left corner.
3. Under "Account Information", fill out the following information:
* Account Type: POP
* Email Address: username@gmail.com
* Incoming Mail Server: pop.gmail.com
* Username: username@gmail.com
* Password: password
4. Select "Add Server..." from the "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)" pop-up menu. Here are the details for it:
* Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.gmail.com
* Server port: 465 or 587
* Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL): Yes
* Authentication: Password
* User Name: username@gmail.com
* Password: password
* Dismiss the window by pressing "OK."
5. Back in the "Accounts" pane, switch to the "Advanced" tab and check the box marked "Use SSL" towards the bottom.
6. The rest of the process is short and sweet, and merely involves changing your Gmail preferences to enable POP access.

:sigh:... hope this helps. I'd say it's something to do with the port you're using for SMTP. Maybe even a problem with port-forwarding on your router. I dunno...

Probably not, unless you have a majorly crappy router ;) To connect to an SMTP server, you only need to make outward connections, which a router generally shouldn't block.

Try typing this in the Terminal:

telnet smtp.gmail.com 465

And see if you can get a connection. If you can't, then it's likely that your problem is with your connection to the internet.

Ha, me too. I typed telnet 'smtp.gmail.com 25' in cmd, and it connected...

By the way Eilsoe, we're not trying to steal your thread... we just have similar problems.

Thats what my SMTP setup looks like in Mail.app and it works now so im not sure.

ALSO, make sure forwarding is on in Gmail, i had to keep turning it on when they first enabled it.

Try setting the outgoing mail server to mail.gmail.com rather than smtp.gmail.com

Very strange, I've got it up just like Butters showed on my home machine (iBook), works like a charm. Have you removed the account and tried the walkthrough on the Gmail site again?

I followed that to begin with :-/

it's odd...

There are detailed instructions (http://gmail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13275) in the gMail Settings page (one of their "learn more" links).
