A couple of days ago, I asked a question in the SOTW forum:

"What does it take to become a moderator?"

...or at least, what does it take to be one of the SOTW judges, which is what I really want to know.

Anyway, I received an e-mail that said there was a reply to my question and I clicked on the link. Nothing. My thread was deleted from the SOTW forum. So I'm re-asking my question here... if that's OK.

To become a moderator, you must be helpful, courteous, and a positive influence on the forums. New moderators are invited by a full vote from existing moderators. Being a moderator is a great job, but it also carries a lot of responsibility - only the brave, the strong, and the fearless need apply =)

yeah, to be a mod here you have to spend a lot of time... just check out the message counts for all the mods...

I just come here and say random antiamerican stuff, so I wont be a moderator anytime soon... but I'd say if you help out, explore ALL the forums (it's been a while since I've been out of this one) you'll make it...

its not just the amounts of post, its how helpful you are to people here. there is alot more to it to=)

There are alot of things that can lead you to mod-dom.

Just be very considerate to the people around here.
Show yourself to be an upstanding kirupian.
Make it a point to help people out.
Follow the rules.
Don't piss off any mods or Kirupa.

Stay out of Random *lol*.

I became a moderator about 2 years ago when I actually used to help people with Flash and now I just poke my head around random every now and then. I guess you could call me a retired mod, but kirupa keeps me around so that I can ban people!

To become a mod, you can do what I do:

1) Pick on Alex as much as you can.

2) Pretend you know Flash and help out as much as possible.

3) Spam in Random, but I wouldn't recommend it because it's addicting.

4) Repeat step one over again till Alex cries. :evil:

haha, i remember when kirupa first inducted me, i had just hit 100 posts and i thought it was an automatic thing, just found out i helped a lot but at the time it was pretty much just kirupa running around helping everyone. show that you are worthy of becoming a mod and the council that does not exist shall decide.

I've been a Mod for about a month now and here are the things I realized:

Good things about being a Mod:
1) You get to ban members if they cause trouble. This is really fun especially when that member is annoying. :P

2) Members like Alex, look up to you with full admiration. =)

3) You get to be on the panel of judges for SOTW.

4) You get to represent one of the best forums out there.

Bad things about being a Mod:
1) You gotta keep a close watch on other members and make sure no one causes trouble.

2) You gotta keep the forum clean and organized, making sure there's no cross posts. If there are, then you'll need to delete them.

3) Just because you're a mod, people think you're a Flash God, which isn't true in my case. I'm just a Flash Learner so don't expect me to have all the answers.

Those are basically the pros and cons of being a mod, so is it as glamorous as you think it is? :P

The main thing that attracts me for being a moderator is, like mentioned above, the SOTW judge job. I'd like to give comments about submitted websites to give advice or congratulate. The banning thing is a cool extra, but I don't think I will ever use that. (Mwahahaha...be banned!! Die!!)

Sadly, we don't get badges. :)

Although it's only the mods who get to vote on SotW, you can still always post critiques about the sites in the thread. And on Site Check too. People are usually very appreciative of any serious feedback about their work. :)

Are you asking to become a mod? You think you have what it takes to be a mod? Be sure to exhibit some sense of maturity and prose and soon you'll be on that road to moderatorship. But remember: it's not easy becoming a mod, and it's not easy changing somebody's status to moderator. Soon everyone will want to become a moderator and it all comes down to a big flurry of posts concerning why he or (rarely) she deserves to be a mod. Also, what you post usually reflects the type of person you are. Keep that in mind.

I think all of the moderators that I know of since I joined Kirupa have not actually asked to become mods. They just helped out other users, posted friendly and informative answers and helped establish a good community feeling on the boards. :)

i think it would be a good experience to become a mod. And it would be really cool to me a mod and represent kirupa fourms. but thats just me, and i think i have what it takes. :beam:

There are already too many mods considering the size of the forums. Moderators should be appointed when there's a need for a moderator.:sigh:

considering the size of this site. there is alot of members. if you look in the member section there is about 400 pages worth of members.:trout: =)

But how many are actually active members? There are about 7 busyish forums, and some infrequently used ones. There are 18 mods plus Kirupa. although not all are here a lot, most of them are. The boards could run smoothly with even half the number of mods IMO.

although kajinku was just asking about being a SOTW judge, here are my two cents on being a moderator...

im a moderator on another flash community, and it simple isnt fun. You have to be active, warn members when they do anything against the forum rules, write software reviews, move/close threads, deal with all kinda of (annoying) members, and be very helpful. Dont really think of being a mod unless you really think you're capable of that. :)
