View Full Version : Why do people always say they really hate Microsoft?

I never quite got that one. It's a trend amongst net people to claim they really hate Microsoft. And most of them use Windows themselves, which is so ironic it's stupid. If you really hate Microsoft and/or Windows, don't use their products, problem solved. And even if you don't use their products, why would you really hate Microsoft? I guess it's some kind of trend, people say it to appear 'cool'.
I myself use Windows XP and am very satisfied with it. It has never crashed on this comp that I've been using for a few months, for instance. And I think it's a great OS all-around. Some of their other products may be crap, but that's why we don't use said products.
The only thing that I really hold against Microsoft is Internet Explorer. Sure, I don't use it, but I'm a web designer and the fact that they refuse to comply with the w3c and other standards makes life a lot harder for us designers. Really, designing a site (I'm talking about HTML with CSS generally, not Flash) has become something like 50% work to make the site and then 50% work to make it look and operate correctly in Internet Explorer.
But otherwise, people who say that Microsoft and Windows suck and that they hate thrm, but then always use Windows and probably MS Office just amaze me.

I in no way am following the trend, I just hate microsoft's takeover-type tactics. I know that is how business goes, its cutthroat, but i definitely causes me to root for the underdogs out there. I use windows xp because windows is what i grew up with. Just because i dont root for microsoft doesnt mean im not going to use some of their superior products. Im just not going to be sad when someone outdoes them.

This is gonna turn into yet another Mac vs PC debate, I can feel it coming.

Anyway, I hate Microsoft becuase I hate their crappy products, Windows has always crashed with me, and still does every so often. I constantly get programs screwing up and my comp (3.2ghz) takes FOREVER to boot.

Admitidly I have never formatted my HD, and theres a ton of crap on my computer, but I have a simmilar issue with my Mac and it runs perfectly.

I use a PC becuase I can play games. Apart from the gameing, I prefer Macs for EVERYTHING else.

I did not say anything about Macs and I didn't really ask how well people's Macs worked, but thanks for starting that.

Windows XP works great (too bad it isn't /really/ backwards compatible though), Office 2003 is extraordinary. But IE, Windows messenger, SP2, baad Microsoft! Bad!

I don't hate Microsoft, but I don't love them either, :D They are a company. They make products and they want to make cash, lots of it. Take a step outside and look at every other company. they can say what they want, but they all just want to make cash, lots of it. I think the whole 'I hate Microsoft' thing started cause people hate the fact that Microsoft made loads, while they didn't.

That's the only part of Microsoft I hate, :P The fact that they won't lend me some of their coins, ;)

Hehe, nice post Deaddocus.
Yeah, you can't really expect Microsoft to be a charity organization or anything. I use those products of theirs that I like, the ones I don't like, I don't use. I just think they would realize how IE effects everyone and what their role in that is. Actually I think they do realize, but don't care and/or have other agendas.

Yeah but any thread about Microsoft or why people dislike it turns into a debate about which is better.

I dislike M$ because they have a quantity over quality attitude regarding there products. They seem to think that consumers don't care about the quality of the product, because there product is only one they can afford or know how to use. I do own an XP system...but I only own it because Flash is not on Linux, nor does Linux have the uber gaming that M$ does. Everything else I do from Music Production/Remixing to Design & Coding is done on Gentoo and/or the MiniMac I just bought (purely for music production)

On a side note, a few of you mentioned that businesses are just out to make cash. That statement is not entirely true, there are alot of Not For Profit and Charity businesses that thrive. Believe it or not, companies do exist that are about superior products and service. But we do live in a world driven by the all mighty dollar. Which is a double edged sword...on the one hand it has pushed innovation, mass production, and lower prices...on the other hand alot of businesses, or the people in business, are driven by the greed factor and will do anything and everything to stay ahead and on top.

i actually really enjoy microsoft products.

i think people hate microsoft for a wide variety of reasons...
1) it's trendy now to hate big business (microsoft and walmart are particularly getting hit hard)
2) microsoft's products are the most targeted by hackers, etc so their errors are magnified
3) microsoft hasn't really created anything really innovative since BASIC
4) there's no viable option to windows so people feel like they're stuck with it (even though xp has been phenomenal, the windows name [and thus microsoft's image] is still associated with crashing and program errors)
5) microsoft makes their billions selling intellectual property. it's hard to conceptualize and attach a value to intellectual property (whereas it's fairly easy for a physical good), so it's hard and frustrating for people to understand why microsoft is so successful

There are too many bugs in microsofts software that have never really been fixed... they no what the problem is but they still ignore the issues... Win98 was my favorite... minMe was a mistake.. and Xp is a deathtrap...i won't speak about longhorn till i see it... but M$ trackrecord is not good... IE is a complete failure and they know it... they even scrapped the project for a long while.... FF will grow and improve and the extensions are so sick... IE can never compare until they go opensource....

They've used very unfair business practices in the past, have and are in the process of extending monopolies from one area to the other (OS monopoly -> web browser monopoly, I think they'll probably extend their PC monopoly to games consoles sometime soon), and they don't innovate until they have competition (they didn't innovate IE at all until Firefox came along and started snapping at their heels).

They also don't give a d!mn about standards of any kind - every other even slightly modern GUI browser out there has a better CSS2 implementation than IE6, and apparently:

One partner said that Microsoft considers CSS2 to be a "flawed" standard and that the company is waiting for a later point release, such as CSS2.1 or CSS3, before throwing its complete support behind it.

So quite possibly no CSS2 in IE7.. and this is with a Microsoft employee on the design panel. Internet Explorer probably p!sses me off the most, because it's the only product that I really have to use in any way (I need to make sites work with it).

Another thing with Ie is that Ie treats w3c standards as options.... FF is built to comply with the standards

Exactly :thumb:

Try to program a Delphi application that will translate an Access database into an SQL database and you'll soon see why I hate f**king microsoft!!!!

All kind of weird errors. Things like data being corrupted...a lot, not being able to identify a primary key, turning data in the table to crap and then making it ten times worse.....

I was thinking about this the other day. I was curious how many threats are made to Bill Gates life and the amount of names he's called all around the world, every day. Just as I though this our designer walked over going "F**king microsoft. Gates is a b*****d. This s****y excel" :beam:

I hate Microsoft because they're a greedy, power hungry company. If we go back in time to Microsoft and we changed their company so that it never ripped off another company, Microsoft would have gone out of business. Microsoft couldn't have succeeded on their own, in any way, without ripping off other companies and using it for their own personal growth. Lots of Windows users hate Microsoft and still use Windows because they didn't know how much they wouldn't like Windows when they first bought their computer and Linux is too hard for them to use.
