hey guys, I just wanted to know if there was anyone interested in helping me out with my online radio station.... click here to check it out (http://www.wraf.lavaland.net)

I'm looking for DJs (If you want your own show, you can have it...) and once I get the forum up on it, I need moderators... I'm also looking for anyone who knows how to do sound effects, so we can bring some legitimacy to it... I'm also looking for anyone who has suggestions on improving the design.

The purpose of the sation is to showcase good music that doesnt get played on the radio... of course, I don't have the ONLY awesome taste in music in the world, and that's why I really want this to be a community thing...

I'm really excited about it... and I hope you guys are interested.

wow... our tastes are pretty similar.

As far as I know, nothing yet on paying royalties for streaming audio... There was a big fuss about it a month ago or so, because the Recording Associations want internet radio to pay up... however, most of these stations dont make any money (just consider all those people with ShoutCast Streams playing from their computers...) so as long as I'm not distributing MP3s, I should be ok..

And I LOVE the streets... I should have put one of his songs on the show... oh well... one for next sunday..

you don't need to know anything about radioterminology or anything, (I dont know anything!)

But if you want to help with design, or moderating (once I get the forum going... tonight...) I would appreciate the help. Also, you might have ideas that I have not thought about... just random stuff that could help me improve the site... like what kind of other content to put there, to attract visitors... I know people are not going to come for my sexy sexy voice... lol.

so maybe you can help out in those respects..

yeah, I hate metallica so much for that... they didnt need a lawsuit... they were just being bastards.

I loved how Dave Matthews put it... his band was the first one ever to put out an MP3 with the permission of their label..

he said.. "what the hell am I going to do? Go to some kid's dorm room and tell him... no no no.. don't steal my music?? I'm worth millions... I don't need that.."

man, this whole thing made me remember that I havent listened to them since then...

Sure Metallica could've done nothing and still been millionaire's, but they stood up for their principles even though it made them unpopular.

All the massive bands could just go 'yeah, download mp3s it's great' and people would like them. But they wouldn't be doing a favour to those bands who are still trying to breakthrough, but don't sell enough of their records to be a feasable prospect for a record company, because people are just downloading.

:) I'm gonna see the Foos supporting the Chilis in August, there's rumours of QOTSA and others being added too.

see... here's my thing... Metallica and Dave Matthews became famous for different reasons, and at different times..

I think MP3 sharing is the best thing that could ever happen to music... what does it mean? it means that you can grow a bigger fan base faster (rather than relying on distributing companies, which take most of the profit, and don't do a good job sometimes) and it means that in order for a band to make money, they need to have good music, and a good show.

believe it or not, MP3 sharing hurts most pre packaged music like Britney or Justin Timberlake... cause that's where most of their income comes from... CDs.. but bands like Dave Matthews and the Foo Fighters can survive well just on shows...

Metallica too... but they're too lazy to tour...

I love MP3 sharing because it lets me listen to the kind of stuff that doesnt get played on radio... I can make a better decision about the music I like, and believe it or not, I buy CDs of bands I like... (now the only problem is that those CDs are not distributed in the US much of the time... because of the stupid record companies...)

but I HATE buying a crappy CD.. that's happened to me many times...

I take your point, but it is still difficult to break through if you can't sell albums. In order to make as much from gigging as the likes of the foos and Dave Matthews it helps to have the kind of exposure that comes with a major recording contract.
The Dave Matthews Band got signed to a major label because an album sold well, not for any other reason. this gave them the opportunity to be as successful as they are.

don't get me wrong, I download too, I just don't like to see a band maligned for standing up for what they believe in.

lava
March 11th, 2003, 09:26 PM
actually, Dave Matthews didnt get signed onto a label because they had an album that sold well... they got signed because they had good music and awesome shows... their first CD had to be recorded live, cause thats how their fans wanted it.

They realized that word of mouth is more powerful than a poster at a record store... DMB only got signed after they built a huge fan base in Charlottesville... and they would let their fans record their shows and trade tapes...

You know, for a long time, I saw posters for DMB at record stores, etc, but it wasnt until a fan enthusiastically told me about them that I gave them a try...
and how did he convince me? MP3s and tapes of live shows... Dave Matthews now gets 100 of my dollars every year, from tickets to his shows..

And lets talk about what Metallica did... they sued Napster... ok, that was ok... they were facilitating piracy. But then they threatened universities, and after that, they started suing individuals... they SUED THEIR FANS!

its ok to stand for what you believe in... but that's just abusing the little fan... Rather they should sue the distributing company, which takes over 40 percent of the profit for a CD, if they're that interested in the money...

Try out a couple Evanescence songs, I didn't read mlk's entire list, but if Bring Me To Life isn't on it, then he made some sort of mistake :P:P

And My Tourniquet from their new album is cool too.

while I admit that word of mouth mouth is the best publicity, and that bands who impress their audience enough to utilise this effectively-Dave Matthews being one-can gain a big following that way. I would dispute that major labels sign bands because they have "good music and awesome shows".
The music industry would be a whole lot better if that were true, but the fact is that the album did sell a lot and a major deal followed.

March 11th, 2003, 10:59 PM
eh, I dont know... I listened to their single, and I didnt really like it... it seems to me like someone put that band together... I'm not sure why the WWF is pushing Evanescense so much though...

i must say i do download a lot of music from the internet but if one song really pleases me, and i listen to often, ill go buy a CD.
I mean have some songs that nobody knows but that rock, and that I wouldnt have bought if I hadnt d/l them ;-)
And besides, it really hurts the multimillionairs like Virgin or Universal, but small unknown artist still get paid as much (or as less i should say) all the other ones have too much money anyway....

lava
March 12th, 2003, 03:01 PM
I have to totally agree on this... whatever money bands lose due to MP3 sharing, they make this up by this simple fact:

More people listen to your music, therefore more people are likely to go to your concerts, buy cds, buy your shirts...

SOME artists and record companies complain, because instead of making HUNDREDS of millions, they're going to be making TENS of millions...

but so what? they're still living off music, and that should be good enough...
