What is the purpose of actionscript?

Is it related to any type of programming language for ex.: Java or Javascript (because it looks like it)?

Is it 'object oriented'?

Actionscript is the scripting language for Flash and is very closely related to Javascript.

It is "object oriented" though not a true OOP language. For the most part though, think of it as being so... or better just think of it as Javascript for Flash. Much of it is the same. The differences are outlined in Flash help ... where a better description of Actionscript also exists in the case you want to download the Flash demo (if you havent already) and read about it.
