Alright, I've been in the mood for some good techno/trance bands, and I was wondering if anyone has some recommendations for me. I currently have some cds by Aphex Twin and Autechre, but nothing much else. Aphex Twin is Idisyncratic Bedroom Electronica, but it's still good... Any suggestions?

Yeah aphex rocks,
but definetly check out Darude. Some of the best I've heard. Also, DDR has some great techno you could look into.

you know ian van dahl & lasgo? **amazed**
didn't know they are known outside of belgium...

For techno I recommend Embargo. Not known, but the less known bands often make the greatest music - definitely the case here. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed. As for trance, try Kai Tracid (artist), Iio (artist), Universal Nation (title), Bullet Time (title), and definitely The Benassi Brothers (artist).

A while back Ian Van Dahl released "Castles in the Sky" and Lasgo with "Somethings". I was automatically hooked. Its good to know a wide range of music and artists from different countries. I can certainly say, Belgium and Netherlands make da*n good dance music as well as others.

Nah ... I don't really like Ian van Dahl and Lasgo's style of music, just like Milk Inc etc. It's just so cheap, it's always the same text ... like, I can tell you right now that in every song of those you'll find:
"Why did you close the door ?"
Cheap lovetrance songs ...
By the way, I have my music collection right here, so let's see about some trance/techno music:
Trance:
Daan (in particular 'Housewife')
Benassi Bros
Dave McCullen (in particular '*****')
DJ Dave Davis (in particular 'Trancefiguration')
DJ Liquid (in particular 'Transformers Rave Mix')
DJ Tiësto
DJ Tomcraft
Faithless
GenLog (in particular 'Mockmoon')
Iio
Jimmy Goldschmitz (in particular vs Peter Luts: 'Horizon')
Kai Tracid
Liquido (classic: 'Narcotic')
PPK (in particular 'Resurrection')
Ruff and Jam (in particular 'Another Day')
Techno:
Embargo
Azzido da Bass
DJ Furax
DJ HS
Ixxel (classic: 'Drop that beat')
Marco Bailey
Michael Burkat
Redhead

I like more of a variety if you know what I mean. Sometimes your pissed, you go for hard and sometimes you feel moody, you play something from Ian Van Dahl or IIO, its also good because you can appreciate dance music more than just listening to one particular genre. Playing the hard stuff 24/7 would be dull.

@ voets: since when did faithless become trance and ixxel become techno? :h:
@ minimal: if you like lasgo & ian van dahl, be sure to check out sylver (yeah, with the Y), not really into the whole dance/trance/techno scene, but for what i know of it, i like sylver over lasgo & ian van dahl.
as i already said, not really into the dance/trance/techno stuff, but i really love groovy/clubby beats, be sure to check out Iio - Rapture (deep dish remix), that's the sh*t i'm talkin' bout baby!

DJ Doboy and DJ GT got some good vocal trance mixes. You can usually catch them streaming on WWW.DI.FM (http://WWW.DI.FM).

Its nice to know we have some people here into dance music ;) Faithless is definitely not trance lol, more electronic dance with some funk. I got Sylver's Nighttime calls album, some nice tracks. Although in some ways, I prefer 4 Strings better for some reason with the remix of Turn It Around (Club Mix). IIO is a nice duo group and their tracks are defintiely great and from NY which is pretty cool ;) Funny thing is im not into tech but tracks such as No Regular by Ricky Forbis is good.
but i really love groovy/clubby beats,
Ministry of Sound's The Annual and Clubbers Guide are always fun to listen to.

I'm not saying Faithless is all trance, but they do have trance songs. Like 'God is a DJ', very trance. And ixxel ... it can be classified under techno, but also dance .. because most techno songs are made to dance on.

Guess why I recommended Iio

I like shpongle alot but I wouldn't classify that as 'Trance or Techno' but a more chill psychedelic. Infected mushroom is always good for something more upbeat. Of course they sound much better after the ingestion of certian substances. ;)

I thought it was more techno.
"1. IDM
Acronym standing for "Intelligent Dance Music," founded by acts from labels such as Warp Records, Rephlex Records and Ninja Tune Records. Electronic music made to listen to instead of just dance to.
A catch-all term for electronic music utilizing more than a typical 4/4 beat and a tired, rehashed melody looped for 7 minutes.
Aphex Twin, L.F.O., Boards of Canada and Plaid are some of the best-known IDM acts."
taken from here:

Interesting that the guy puts that he wants some Techno/Trance, but then requests more sounds like AFX. As most of you have recommended techno and trance, here is some more alternative stuff (or 'IDM') :)
All of what gonzales mentions above are excellent, especially LFO's sheath, BOC's Music Has the Right to Children, and anything by Plaid.
And some more:
Squarepusher
Early Autechre (up to Gantz Graf)
Cex
Nautilus
Knifehandchop
Luke Vibert/Wagon Christ/Plug - bit more cheesey/acidy
Ceefax (bro of Squarepusher - Exidy Tours is great)
Xela
Arovane
Susumu Yokata (more minimal)
Xela
Kid606
Venetian Snares
matmos
mum?
two lone swordsmen
(there are loads of others but I can't think of them right now...)
I'd also recommend getting to know some labels, and checking out their websites. Along with Warp and Reflex, you might want to have a look at:
Toytronic
AI
City Centre Offices
Tigerbeat6
Also, goto a good music website that lets you listen to snippets of tracks - www.boomkat.com are excellent with good reviews and a weekly newletter, similar artists to the one you're looking at, and sample tracks.

If you want good trance/techno, look for the album Trance Masters. It has in my opinion the best mix of everything that makes up the genre. Here's an amazon link:

Yeah, I think I should change my classification of Aphex as Techno/Trance, and further change it from IDM into.....Idiosyncratic Bedroom Electronica. At least thats what RealPlayer tells me. I know, it's RealPlayer, but, then again, IDM came from Urban Dictionary......Lets call it....IDMIBE!!
Now the only problem is, my statement for next month is gonna be incredibly high, since I listened to some of the snippets, and bought about 25 cds. Great recommendations, thanks.
As for "angry" music, pop in some Norse Black Metal, man. Dimmu Borgir, Bathory, BURZUM, Emperor, those guys make your lives seem like strolling in a field of daisies. Makes a great workout music too.

thats funny you mention this. basically for a long time the worlds IDM scene only existed on the internet through news groups like hyperreal.org's IDM list. initially, there were quite a few number of tracks that you could dance to (take a listen to warp's AI comps or early aphex material) but as the music evolved people wanted to change the name IDM to something else (ive heard real players name as well as ELM (electronic listening music)and a few others...) so real player's classification is somewhat correct (though not coloquially...)

Whoa... I'm surprised noone has mentioned Alphazone - the undisputed masters of hi-NRG trance! http://skywarp.de
If you want it hard and fast, nothing beats Alphazone's remix of Ian van Dahl's 'Try':thumb:
DJ Doboy's Trancequility sets are pretty nice, too. I'm listening to Vol. 18 right now. Very tastefully selected tracks.
