Opacity effect

I'm trying to figure out what effect is used on these thumbnails?

Are there two seperate thumb images used, one at lower brightness and the other at normal, then faded in? Or is it AS and changing the opacity on a darkened image?

I think that the one that rollovers, is a simple shape made in flash than on rollover faded...

yeah simple rollover effect, basically a black square with 50-80% opacity.
