I enjoyed AOE II. After playing the campaigns, I just create a custom game using the Byzantines (!!!). Have one town as my ally so we can trade. Have 3-4 enemy towns and then I build my massive kingdom by building 2 layers stone walls across the central part of the town, every 2 main high walls, I build two Bombard towers with a gate in between and that contines all round my town's territory which is like 75% of the whole map. Put two footman at each gate for guard and watch. I separate the town into two sections, outer and inner. Bascically, outside have the farms, work and machinery and inner, the central town center and build a small courtyard for the men and horses to train (of course they dont really, but just imagine...). What I usually do is build another layer of stone wall across infront of the bombard towers so those pisky arrow men dont kill my towers or the huge trubechets. And then on to conquering, like converting with priests and sea wars. Pretty cool though takes a while. :)

I used to do a very similar thing to that, id always explore tha map creating new villages in different area's with armys of men in different area's, although some of them got conquered as they wernt very strong when the other army would come to conquere me,

AoE and AoE2 were some of the best RTS's around, minus their use of crappy aliased times new roman fonts in the menus... ;)

AoE3 is supposed to be graphically superior to "any game out currently". Apparently it makes use of a lot of shaders and "new" techniques. I'm soiled!

The game looks really nice! I never got into MS's RTS games, they seem to take a really long time to complete. I may give AOE 3 a whirl sometime after it is released...just for the graphics :egg:

info i know so far:
-uses havok physics engine (i know in an rts...)
-should be out second half of this year
-the graphics will most definatly be scaleable to a big degree (just like age of mythology you could run it on a p3 450 mz with 128mb ram and 16mb ati rage) therefore if customised right won't lag.
-there will be a total remodling of the economic and battle systems.
-some new features such as a home city which will give you suplies.

more information can be found here http://aom.heavengames.com/cgi-bin/forums/display.cgi?action=ct&f=17,20931,0,10 its inside an old age of mythology forum i used to vist when i played online / did map design a while ago. i'm waiting for heaven games to finish their age 3 site.

also for more screen shots and concept art go here http://aom.heavengames.com/gallery/aoe3

personaly can't wait for this game. Big Age of Empires fan.

Isn't it tough to play an RTS game on a console? I would think that using your mouse to select/command units would be far simpler than using a controller.

With the PS2 version they released a mouse for it & also you could use any USB mouse for it, as the PS2 has USB ports...

It would also put you at a disadvantage to have 640x480 resolution. Unless you had a HDTV, in which case it would be higher, but not as high as some monitors of comparable price go ;).

I am still biased towards computers for playing most video games. With the exception of games like Street Fighter and other 2D/3D martial arts games, I prefer the mouse/keyboard combination the best :pirate3:

For x-mas I networked the upstairs living room and my brother and I played against eachother. A little family lan party I suppose.

i remember when aoe2 came out originally only me and another mate had a copy but with in 3 months 14 of my friends had it and we all converged on 'the zone' friday nights to play. The best games were:

phoinix wars -large, random map [usualy arabia or green arabia] no fixed aliences / random civs -8 players, most of the time either me or the other guy whom bought the game originally won.

The varients of castle bloob especially build your own, castle blood so civs with bad unique units would stand a chance. This was usaualy a free for all and any one could win.

--
some nights we would play from 7pm till well past midnight once or twice it was like till 5am (we were like 14-15 and had nothing else to do on a friday night)

ahhh yes the good old nights at 'the zone' i remember it like yesterday, going there and meeting people around the world, opening up a battle and playing. We always played 'protect the king' i think thats what it was called. But it was great. I cant wait to see when they unviele the buildings, enemys and characters...

I always played Custom games, like Archer's Blood, the Legend of Zelda RPG, and a bunch of other cool maps and scenarios that people had made.

Ben: the name of the game you wree playing was regicde where you start with a castle and the king which you had to protect, that was fun but it was fairly easy to win, just to a normal random map archer rush (usualy with brittons) and keep them locked in their castle, then eventually work up to seige weapons(or if the castle is out of range of the town center use the archers to take it out). and the king is yours.

also you computer should run the game as Ensemble studios always seems to allow for a wide audience to play their games.
---

also for anyone whom still plays age of mythology check out this menu pack (i contributed one background for it) some of them are good and the others can get a bit anoying.

i might go back to the zone to play age 2 (with xpac of course - its allready installed) just to hone my skills, i would play age of mythology but the gameplay will proberly be more like to age 2.

i can't wait for it to come out as well, hopefully my 640 ram 2.5 ghz and 128mb geforce 4 ti will be enough to atleast have 1600x1200 res with high detail modles. (i don't care too much about shaders and stuff)
