Well to go with all time you'd have to look at who has made the greatest impact world wide and I think that would be Bob Marley. Elvis and Jacko have made pretty big impressions too, but they both sort of lost their minds towards the end of their careers.

An insanely tough question as an artist can be brilliant and "the best" for so many different reasons.

I'm a huge fan of AC/DC and I think they're genuinely brilliant as they have managed to release over 200 songs all based around a few simple chords. Any band that can create so many great riffs from just a few basic chords is my idea of genius.

Also, I personally don't like them in the slightest but I do admire ABBA for writing some of the best pop tracks of all time on which a lot of different artists nowadays have based their work upon.

I think the problem with this thread though is that most people will just list their favourite artist and not the ones they think are genuinely brilliainit/geniuses.

Metallica, Joe Satriani, AC/DC, Pantera, Leonard Cohen, ABBA, The Beatles, The Bee Gees and probably a few more definately deserve a place in the list though.

Probably Bob Dylan, Don McLean or David Bowie. Not my favourites but phenomenal musicians.

Best of all time is hard to pick though.

-the beatles + the solo works of john & paul

-the velvet underground + solo work of lou reed

-david bowie

-the living end (chris cheney plays the g-tar with some of the best solos every also u got to love the way bass player scott jumps up on his double bass in concerts)
