so i use flash all day at work and im busy working on this one site. anyway, i usually just leave all my apps running over night so i can just pick up where i left off the next day. so today i come to work and try to save a file (a very IMPORTANT, CRUCIAL flash file!!!) and i get an error that says something like "cant save file cause its past its end". now i have no idea what that means so i try to save to my desktop.. same thing. so then i try and save to the network drive... same thing. so i think for a bit and realize i didnt make many changes to it so i can close it and re-open it and redo the minor changes i wanted to save in the first place. only now my file is totally gone. the .swf still exists but the .fla is GONE!!!!! i have been working on this project for weeks and the file is the main shell for all the other .swfs that get loaded into it. i am so screwed now. so my question is does this happen to anyone else? god i hate macs now...

Wow that really sucks man! I've never had that happen to me (PC), but if it did I'd be extremely pissed.

matt - have you tried pasting the actual error message into google and doing a search? Maybe others who have had the same error have a solution for that.

kirupa -

thats a good idea. i'll do that next time since i no longer have the original file. ive just never seen an error like that.

okay, so without saying how, i was able to "recover" my .fla, but my methods are totally frowned upon here at kirupa.com so we wont get into that (plus i dont want to be banned...) anyway take a look at this:

here is the site before i lost everything: link (http://www.imageworkssoftware.com/clients/newJourney/)

and here is what my "recovered" file looks like: link (http://www.imageworkssoftware.com/clients/newJourney/messed_up/njMain2.swf)

whats lame is my frame rate should be 30 FPS, but this thing constantly runs at 12. not to mention the green crap everywhere. and my background color changing bar thing doesnt work anymore (yes ive checked the AS...). let me just say that today has not been a good day.

That first one was amazing, very nice work. I have to ask how you made it where the entire HTML page was flash, yet you didn't have the scroll bars turn on? (If you don't mind me asking)

its pretty easy. you just tell flash not to scale the movie:

Stage.scaleMode = "noScale";

and then set your html margins to 0 and tell the browser to strech the flash movie to 100% of the width and height of the browser window.

I can tell you right now, that is not a mac's fault. I have had that happen to me 4 times on a PC. It's Flash's issue, and apparently they are aware of it and fixing it. It's a permissions issue with the file and timing out improperly. In the end, flash simply discards the file along with it;s hold on it. It's unfortunate, but don't blame the mac. ;)

thats weird. ive used flash since version 5 on a PC and ive never had that happen. thanks for the heads up though.

flash 2k4 for PC on XP -- as I said, 4 times. It was a beating each and every time. It happened a 5th time and all i did was leave flash open, navigate to the file in explorer, and copy/paste the file somewhere else. I don't know if that's a foolproof method, but it worked that one time. since then, i've been on a mac exclusively and haven't had a single issue. So who knows...definitely a bad, bad problem.

GRAAK. I'm scared now, I leave flash on overnight all the time with all my files open.
Granted, I hibernate my computer, but still. O_o
Scared now.

I've left apps (incl. flash) open all night -by accident- but never with a open file and I haven't had any problems ...
..funny tho, it never occured to me that waiting for a program to re-launch and then to re-open a file from the recent list was ever a long enough ordeal to become impatient with to deliberately try and out-fox it :sure: I mean, how many seconds are you going to save in your life by doing so ???

..but I am sorry to hear about you file matt

Yeah, I Ctrl/Apple + S about every five minutes.

But if you hit that glitch that's been discussed it'll just delete the file.
