I am pretty sure I never posted this, and didn't find anything in a search..
but does anyone here like The Maxx? I was obsessed with the comic in the 5th grade, and go through periods of nostalgia for the small niche cult superhero.
It was a super cool comic and had a neat show on MTV to boot. Back when I liked MTV, cause they had cool shows like that.
And, as I was searching for some info on it in google, I ran into this forum thread...

Check out the last poster... it was quite a weird coencidence to run into him there!

ha! asphaltcowboy, whatever happened to him?
I love the Maxx comic book. However, I didn't really like the show very much. I only watched it a couple of times. I think that it was different from the comic book. I don't like it when they make TV shows out of comic books. I think that it gives good stories a cartoon feel.

haha, GreenLanter, are me and you the only ones on?
As for the show, I thought it was excecuted quite well -- I really loved that it seemed to often be just shots of the comic, zoming in slowly... I remember the fist episode opening was like that, as The Maxx was sitting in a cardboard box in an alley... talking about cheers and the shows in his head...
they're almost always better :)

Can't believe I won! Sorta happy... but man, see yah later money...
And I looked around on the net, and gathered that the comics themselves would run about 200 dollars. The statue is pretty cool, probably would run another 50 or something, and I dont know that I included glow in the dark #1 and FOM.
Anyway, :beam:

For those that were into it, which was not that many people. It had a kind of small cult following. Although, lately I have been hearing a lot about it. I think it is having a sort of revival.

The Maxx was, and still is the best thing to come out of image comics.. of course IMO.
Who is the Maxx?
The Maxx is a bum. That is, a homeless person. He is also the Guardian Spirit of the Leopard queen, a mystical entity from his dreams where he runs through the plans of the Australian outback battling various creatures in her defense. The Leopard Queen is not just in his dreams though, she also manifests in reality as the Maxx's case worker and all around liberal do gooder. The story progresses from page one in a miriad of confusing dream sequences, and what one must assume in the beginning is a mass of delusion on the part of the Maxx. Is he really a homeless person in NYC or is he a god of the outback and the homeless persona is just a dream of that god? Or is he a mad homeless person with some rather outlandish delusions? One is not sure except for the fact that the enemies of the Maxx tend to manifest in the real world as well.. giving the indication that the whole myth angle is the reality.
His enemies are many, but the main character is "Mr Dark" (forgive me if he's mr. shadow or something similar, it's been years since I've read it.) In the outback, Dark takes the form of a man, in the NYC reality, he takes the form of a block of clay in a bag. His servants are called Iz, and they come in black and white forms. An Iz in the outback delusion, looks like a head with legs and teeth. When in the NYC reality they look to the rest of us, like whatever they are dressed up like. ie an Iz is given a flowery hat and a moo moo, they look like an old lady out for a strole, put em in a fedora and a tie and they look like a businessman.
To tell the truth.. that's about all I remember about the comic.. I do also remember that it was very confusing to me even while reading it.

Actually, Julie, his case worker in NYC, is the one with the dreams. Well, where the Maxx is mercilessly transported to and from, the Outback, AKA Pangea, which is all in Julie's psyche.
...His enemies are many, but the main character is "Mr Dark" (forgive me if he's mr. shadow or something similar, it's been years since I've read it.)
I forgive you, but it is actually Mr. Gone ;)
In the outback, Dark takes the form of a man, in the NYC reality, he takes the form of a block of clay in a bag. His servants are called Iz, and they come in black and white forms. An Iz in the outback delusion, looks like a head with legs and teeth.
Few more things. Gone is able to roam freely between Julie's mind and NYC. He was originally a man (and I won't tell you everything about him, or why he in fact WAS clay later on, cause you gotta all read the comics and find all the great twists!). As for the Isz (singular Is), in the Outback they are small white creatures, and vegetarians (although still enemies of Maxx, and it doesn't matter that they are vegetarians as the Outback is mostly vegetation). When Gone brings them to the real world, they are turned inside out, making them black and carnivores.
When in the NYC reality they look to the rest of us, like whatever they are dressed up like. ie an Iz is given a flowery hat and a moo moo, they look like an old lady out for a strole, put em in a fedora and a tie and they look like a businessman.

"Actually, Julie, his case worker in NYC, is the one with the dreams. Well, where the Maxx is mercilessly transported to and from, the Outback, AKA Pangea, which is all in Julie's psyche."
That's right.. and very important to the story as well. The title, as well as my discription kind of make the whole thing sound like a story about the Maxx, where as it really was about Julie and her delusions/realities. I really liked the Julie character. So atractive in such a "real world" style that comics seem to have lost these days. The only thing I find contention with is this ". .all in Julie's psyche." Perhaps you're right.. but I like that the author made the story multi perspective interpretational. I'm still convinced that Pangea was the reality and NYC and all of us in this world are her delusion from that reality. But hey.. like I said, that's why the story was so fun.
"I forgive you, but it is actually Mr. Gone "
****, how could I forget that. Mr. Gone is SUCH A COOL NAME. Someone was thinkin really hard, or was trippn on something when they wrote this. :)
Thanks for the clarifications. I just wish I hadn't sold my original run of the first 10. I'm kickn myself now.
PS - the best part about the Maxx figure was getting the Iz'es. I was supposed to get a bag of them, all black with one white one, but my contact never panned out on it. :(

well I never got passed issue 19, although now I own em all so I surely will!
Although... wait, okay I DID read issue #35, and ... spoilers (it IS the last issue:P) :
The reality they all lived in was a bubble, which popped and a new reality began, as I remember. This being Julie's Dream world makes SO much more sense now. And I remember how Gone went back to the outback with his daughter, Sarah... but she was younger... she never grew in the outback? Hm. Can't member. I know time was different there.
Anyway, I believe what you said was right.

It has some Spawn figure in package (which is neat I guess)+Maxx with four isz MIB (which is like 20 dollar value right there, it's the rarest of the figures so I gather)+ Maxx out of Box with isz. I want it cause I can have my cake and eat it too :)

So, I was confused about something with that 3 tbp set. Is the sale like an INDEFINITE sale? Cause in my ebay, it says there is 1 day, 9 hrs 57 min or something. Okay, so I just finished comics 1-20, the end of the first story arc. And, I'm gonna retract my retraction to upuaut; unless things change in the next 15 issues (which they most likely will, seeing the way 35 ended up... kinda sucks having read that :P), but unless they change, this is what I've gathered so far (spoilers! Seriously do not read until you at LEAST get a hold of a few comics and decide if you want to discover this on your own, as it's quite the ride and good time to read!):
OKAY, the outback is Julie's psyche. Mr. Gone, (aka Artimis P. Gone, aka Uncle Artie to Julie, although not actually her uncle), Sarah's father, can roam freely there, seeing that he is a 3rd-rate student of the mystic arts. He knew Julie and her family from when she was very young, when she created Pangea. She used to escape there, to be the 'Jungle Queen', with her pet leopard (only in the outback, mind you). She lived in a fortress that she often built from clay and sticks in her front yard.
When she was younger, she witnessed a rabbit hit by a car, having it's leg broken/squished. She tried to care for the rabbit, but found it too much for her; eventually, the scratching got the best of her, and her parents, at which point her mom decided to kill the rabbit with a shovel, which Julie witnessed. The rabbit then became ingrained in her; it was her 'spririt animal'.
A quick disertation about the outback, spirit animals, and the like:
According to the comics, everyone has a spirit animal guide, and an outback. They are the places inside of us, where are inner most thoughts, feelings, and persons are kept (I say persons purposefully here. Julie had "lil' Julie, the adult Jungle Queen, and her Real World self all living in Pangea at one point, although that really SHOULDN'T happen. Not recommended). So we all have a spirit animal also, which guides us in times when we are in most need of it.
Julie's outback (and I'm guessing everyone's), isn't just in her head. It's a physical place, another plane, from which and into which things can travel (although not easily; the lampshade was a fluke). But this sort of sets up the entire story and why it works.
The Maxx is actually Julie's spirit animal. I'll explain this later.
Back to the story. So some years passed, and Julie was violated by, yep, non other than Mr. Gone. But, having witnessed her mothers' masterful use of denial and self-repression over the years, and having to do it herself when she witnessed her mother kill her pet rabbit, Julie buried this deep inside, keeping the hurt in and not facing it. Then, some time later, she accidently ran over a man in the rain; this was Dave, a plumber (yep), later called The Maxx. Julie had thought him to be another rapist, and simply didn't break. As Dave flew back into an alleyway, he knocked a lamp (with a purple lampshade) into the wall of the alley; not against, into. It fell into a portal Mr. Gone had left leading to Pangea.
Gone pushed the lamp back into the 'Real World', where he noticed Julie covering Dave up, deciding he was still breathing and could make it on his own. She then placed the lampshade over his face, which melded to him, covering him, giving him his purple costume and massive overbite (which is actually the shade's bottom part :P).
I don't know yet how they meet again. But, Julie projected her own spirit animal (the rabbit) and outback onto Dave, making him her real-life Maxx. I think the title is meaningless; everyone's spirit animal is also their Maxx. But, this put all of Maxx's own inner outback on hold, his quest for a spirit animal, and everyone else in the story, basically, until Gone was able to show Julie the Truth about it all. After she was able to face the Truth, Dave and Maxx were no longer connected; Dave wasn't her protecter, her hero; the Leopard Queen and Julie's outback were healed. And to top it all off, Gone revealed to Sarah that her spirit animal is a horse (which was 'lightly' touched upon when, after Julie ran off to get even farther away from her truth in the latter half of the story. Maxx and Sarah shared dreams (outbacks), and Maxx got a glimpse of what Sarah's outback was like, along with her Spirit Animal.
So I know this makes little sense, but imagine how hard it is when it's scattered throughout 20 issues of a comic book! If anyone has anything to add or correct, let me know (but if it's revealed in 21-35, don't tell me yet!). I'll update this when I finish the rest of the comics.
In other news, my Maxx toys came, and they are REALLY COOL. I now have four Isz decorating my monitor and a Maxx givin the ol' double-duece to anyone that happens to check the time on my alarm clock.
I should be getting my complete set of WildStorm cards soon, and I ordered the complete set of Topps today.
The TPB set that was mentioned does in fact just start over again, as long as it's in stock. So next check I think I'll get that.
